Geyser Buying Guide India 2026
The geyser aisle sells you stars and litres. Neither is the decision. What actually decides whether you're happy is the type matched to the room, whether the inner tank survives your water, and the pipes nobody tells you aren't in the box.
The quick answer
For a bathroom, buy a storage geyser - 15 litres if one or two of you bathe at different times, 25 if you’re a family of four or you take showers. For a kitchen sink or a single washbasin, buy a small instant heater of 3 to 6 litres. If you have a ventilated space and want the lowest running cost, a gas geyser does the same job on cheap LPG. That’s the whole decision, and it comes before any brand, star rating or feature list.
The honest “but” is that most of the regret in this category doesn’t come from choosing the wrong brand - it comes from choosing the wrong type. A 3-litre instant will never fill a bucket, no matter whose badge is on it. A 25-litre tank on a kitchen wall is money spent to rinse dishes. And a gas geyser in a sealed bathroom with no vent isn’t a bad buy, it’s a hazard. Get the type right and almost any branded unit will make you reasonably happy; get it wrong and the best geyser on the market won’t.

The four things that actually matter
Strip the box of its badges and a geyser decision comes down to four things.
- The type, matched to the room. Storage for a bathroom, instant for a tap, gas where there’s ventilation. This is the decision; everything else is refinement.
- The inner tank and your water. The tank is what fails. Hard water is what kills it. The coating and the inner-tank warranty are the specs that predict whether you get five years or fifteen.
- The real installed cost. The pipes, the 16A plug and the plumber are not in the sticker price, and they’re not small.
- Whether the brand will actually turn up. After-sales is the most variable part of this category, and a seven-year tank warranty is worth nothing from a service network that doesn’t answer the phone.
What doesn’t matter as much as the aisle suggests: the BEE star badge. Nearly every branded storage geyser on sale is already 5-star, so it almost never separates the two models you’re actually deciding between - and as we’ll get to, it measures something narrower than most buyers assume. Feature counts are the other distraction. A digital temperature display is pleasant and it’s also one more component that can fail.
Step 1: Instant, storage or gas
This is the decision that decides everything else, so make it properly. The three types aren’t a good-better-best ladder - they’re built for different jobs.
A storage geyser heats a full insulated tank and holds it hot, typically at around 2,000 W. Because the hot water is already sitting there, you can draw a bucket or run a shower at full flow. The trade-off is that once you’ve drawn the tank down, you wait for it to reheat.
An instant (instantaneous) heater has a small 3 to 6 litre tank and heats on demand at a much higher 3 to 4.5 kW. Hot water arrives in seconds, but only at the rate the element can heat it - roughly 2 to 4 litres per minute. That number is the whole story. A kitchen tap runs at about 3 litres a minute, which an instant can just about serve. A shower wants around 8, which it cannot.
A gas geyser has no storage tank at all - it lights a burner and heats water as it flows through a copper coil, so hot water keeps coming for as long as you run the tap. It’s sized in litres per minute rather than tank litres, and 6 LPM is the standard household size, enough for a bucket bath or a single shower. Gas is cheaper than electricity to run and it works during a power cut, but it must be installed somewhere ventilated.

The practical answer for most homes is a storage geyser in the bathroom and, if the kitchen needs hot water, a cheap instant at the sink. Gas earns its place when you have the ventilation and you’re heating a lot of water - the running-cost gap is real, and so is the safety requirement.
Step 2: What size tank you actually need
Once you’ve settled on storage, the size question follows from how your household bathes, not from the number of people alone. Hot water demand runs roughly 15 to 25 litres per person for a bucket bath and 25 to 35 litres for a shower - but you mix cold water in, so the tank doesn’t need to cover that figure outright.
Work it out in four steps:
- Count who bathes in the same window. Four people bathing across two hours is a different problem from four bathing back to back. Only the overlapping ones size your tank.
- Pick your demand per person - the lower end if you take bucket baths, the upper end if you take showers.
- Adjust for where you live. In north India, winter inlet water sits around 10 to 15 degrees; in Chennai it’s closer to 22 to 25. Colder incoming water means more hot water from the tank for the same comfortable bath, so northern homes should size up.
- Round to a real size. Geysers come in 6, 10, 15 and 25 litres for domestic use, so land on the nearest one rather than agonising over a precise figure.

Two counter-recommendations here, because both directions cost money. Don’t buy a size up “to be safe.” A bigger tank costs more to buy, takes longer to heat, occupies more wall and leaks more heat while idle, and if you’re bathing one at a time you’ll never draw the extra litres. But equally, don’t squeeze a family of four into 15 litres to save two thousand rupees - the second and third person get lukewarm water, and that irritation lasts as long as you own it.
Step 3: The inner tank, and what really ends a geyser’s life
Here’s the thing the box won’t tell you: geysers rarely die of anything interesting. The thermostat is replaceable, the element is replaceable, the electronics mostly work. What ends a geyser’s life is the inner tank, scaled and corroded by hard water over years - and hard water is the norm across much of India. If you see white scaling around your taps, this section matters more to you than any other on this page.
Three defences stack up, and they’re worth understanding because they’re the difference between a five-year geyser and a fifteen-year one.
- The tank coating. A glass-lined (porcelain-enamelled) or titanium-enamel inner tank puts a barrier between mineral-rich water and the metal shell. A bare tank in hard water is on a clock.
- An anti-scale heating element. Scale forms on the hottest surface first, which is the element - and a scaled element heats slower and costs more to run. Elements made of alloys like Incoloy resist this considerably better than plain ones.
- A sacrificial anode rod. A rod of magnesium or aluminium that corrodes preferentially, drawing the corrosive reaction to itself and away from the tank walls. It’s consumable by design and it is the single cheapest thing protecting your most expensive component.
Then compare the one number that summarises all of it: the inner-tank warranty. The good ones offer five to seven years, and that figure is the manufacturer’s own bet on how its tank survives Indian water. Note that it’s usually separate from - and longer than - the comprehensive warranty on the rest of the unit, so read which is which rather than the biggest number on the carton. On genuinely hard water, buy the tank and skip the features; a hard-water-rated tank with a plain indicator lamp will outlive a softer tank with a digital display.
Step 4: Star ratings, and what they don’t tell you
The BEE star rating on a storage water heater measures exactly one thing, and it isn’t heating efficiency. It measures standing loss - the energy a full tank consumes over 24 hours when no water is drawn, measured at a 45 degree temperature difference, once the unit has reached steady state. Lower standing loss earns more stars. In plain terms, it rates the insulation: how well the tank holds heat while sitting there doing nothing.
That definition has a direct consequence for your bill. If your geyser stays switched on for hours, the standing loss is running the whole time and a 5-star tank genuinely saves you money by reheating less often. If you switch it on for 30 minutes, bathe, and switch it off, you’ve given the standing loss almost no opportunity to matter, and the premium for the extra stars takes a long time to repay. The bigger saving, for that usage pattern, is simply not leaving the geyser on all day.
The scheme covers single-phase household storage heaters from 6 to 200 litres, and it’s a mandatory labelling category, so any legitimate storage geyser will carry a label. Worth knowing: BEE revised the star rating plan for these, and the new plan took effect on 1 July 2026 and runs to 31 December 2027, with the amendment published in the Gazette of India on 23 December 2025 under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001. Revised thresholds mean the bar for each star moved, so a 5-star geyser rated under the new plan is held to a stricter standing-loss limit than one labelled before it - a point worth keeping in mind when you compare an older listing against a newly launched model.
None of which changes the practical reality: nearly every branded storage geyser on sale is 5-star already. Treat the badge as a floor to clear, not a way to choose.
Step 5: Pressure rating and where you live in the building
This one catches out flat buyers specifically. Upper floors of a high-rise, and any home fed by a pressure pump, push higher water pressure into the geyser’s tank than a ground-floor gravity-fed line does - and the tank has to be built to take it. Look for a pressure rating of around 8 bar and an explicit “high-rise compatible” note. Most decent branded geysers qualify, but it’s worth confirming rather than assuming, because a tank rated for less will fail early under pressure it wasn’t designed for.
The related part is the multi-function safety valve in the box. It’s the component that bleeds off excess pressure, and it needs to actually be fitted - not left in the packaging by an installer in a hurry. Check it’s there and check it’s installed. Owners occasionally report units arriving without one at all, which is a reason to send the unit back rather than to shrug.
Certification: the one label worth checking
In a category full of cheap unbranded listings, certification is a genuine authenticity signal rather than a marketing flourish.
For electric geysers, look for the ISI mark. Under the Electrical Appliances for Domestic Water Heating (Quality Control) Order, 2025, BIS certification became mandatory from 1 March 2025 for electric water heaters sold in India, covering storage heaters, instantaneous heaters and immersion heaters alike. The governing standard for a conventional electric storage geyser is IS 2082:2018.
For gas geysers running on LPG, the standard is IS 15558:2005, which covers instantaneous domestic water heaters and specifies, among other safety requirements, that the gas supply must shut off if water isn’t flowing.
The practical use of this is simple. A no-name storage tank or gas geyser with a vague or absent certification claim is not a bargain - it’s an uncertified appliance combining water with electricity, or with gas, in a small wet room. That’s precisely the wrong place to save eight hundred rupees.
What you’ll actually spend
Geyser prices are fairly stable, so think in bands rather than a single price. For branded units:

Two traps sit at either end. At the bottom, an unbranded tank below the branded floor saves a little now and costs you a corroded tank and no service inside a couple of years. At the top, it’s easy to pay a premium for a feature rather than a tank - a digital display is genuinely nice and it’s also a component that some owners report failing inside a month, while the geyser next to it with a plain lamp has nothing to go wrong.
And the trap that catches everyone: the sticker price is not the installed price. Which brings us to the part no product page mentions.
Installation and the accessories trap
This is the most reliably annoying thing about buying a geyser in India, and it’s near-universal across brands: your geyser will almost certainly arrive without the inlet and outlet connection pipes, and without the 16A plug. The box holds the heater, a safety valve and some mounting hardware. The fittings are left out because they depend on your wall - which is a defensible reason and no comfort at all when the plumber is quoting you.
Then the installer charges for the parts and the labour, and the mark-up can be steep. One owner in our review reported paying ₹750 for two metres of basic pipe. Gas geysers add their own version: many ship without the ignition batteries too.
Three things to plan for before installation day:
- The pipes and plug. Either buy them yourself beforehand for a few hundred rupees, or agree the full parts-and-fitting charge with the plumber up front rather than on the day.
- A 16A socket. A 2,000 W storage geyser needs a proper 16A power point - the round-pin type used for air conditioners - not an ordinary 6A socket. If your bathroom doesn’t have one, that’s electrical work to arrange in advance.
- Proper earthing. Insist on a correctly earthed point. Owners do occasionally report mild current leakage, and a wet bathroom is not where you want to discover an earthing problem.
Gas geysers and the ventilation rule
If you’re considering gas, one rule overrides everything else on this page. A gas geyser burns LPG or piped gas, which consumes oxygen and emits combustion gases including carbon monoxide. In a small sealed bathroom those can reach genuinely dangerous levels. So a gas geyser must be installed in a ventilated space - a bathroom with a permanent vent or a working exhaust, or mounted outside the bathroom feeding the tap - and never in a closed room with everything shut.
Beyond siting, buy the safety hardware. Flame-failure protection is the minimum: it shuts the gas off if the flame goes out, so raw gas doesn’t escape. An oxygen-depletion sensor, which cuts the gas when room oxygen falls too low, is a real upgrade rather than a marketing line. And get it fitted by a technician who checks the gas connection, the regulator and the flame, and confirms the nozzle matches your supply - LPG and PNG are not interchangeable.
One maintenance note that saves a lot of panic: most gas geysers light with a battery-powered spark, and a weak battery is by far the most common reason one won’t light or won’t stay lit. Check that before you conclude the geyser is broken. The part that eventually fails is the copper heat exchanger, so that’s the warranty to compare on a gas unit - the equivalent of the inner tank on a storage geyser. Running cost and maintenance
The running-cost arithmetic is refreshingly simple: units (kWh) = watts x hours / 1,000. A 2,000 W storage geyser run one hour a day uses 2 units a day, so roughly 60 units a month - which at ₹6, ₹8 and ₹10 per unit comes to about ₹360, ₹480 and ₹600 respectively. Domestic tariffs across Indian states span roughly ₹3 to ₹13 a unit, so where you live moves this more than which geyser you bought. For a concrete sense of a single use: a 15 litre tank takes about 30 to 45 minutes to heat fully from cold and consumes something like 1 to 1.5 units doing it.
The biggest lever on that bill isn’t the star rating - it’s the switch. Heating the tank when you need it and turning it off after costs far less than leaving it on and letting the thermostat top it up all day.
Maintenance is undramatic and mostly ignored, which is why so many tanks die early:
- Flush the tank every 6 to 12 months to clear settled sediment - and every 3 to 6 months if your water is hard. Sediment insulates the bottom of the tank, so the geyser works harder and the element runs hotter.
- Have the sacrificial anode rod inspected periodically and replaced once it’s worn past roughly half its original thickness. It costs somewhere around ₹500 to ₹1,500 and it’s protecting a tank that costs many times that.
- Watch for slowing heat-up. A geyser that used to be ready in 30 minutes and now takes an hour is usually telling you the element has scaled, not that it’s dying.
Do those two jobs and you’re doing more for the geyser’s lifespan than any purchase-time feature could.
Common mistakes
- Buying the wrong type. A 3-litre instant to run a bath, or a 25-litre storage tank to rinse dishes. This is the most expensive error in the category and no brand can rescue it.
- Oversizing “to be safe.” A bigger tank costs more, heats slower, and leaks more heat while idle. Size to the people who actually bathe in the same window.
- Choosing on the star badge. It measures idle standing loss, and nearly every branded storage geyser is 5-star anyway. It’s a floor to clear, not a way to choose between two models.
- Ignoring the installed cost. The pipes, the 16A plug and the plumber are real money and they’re not in the sticker price. Budget for them or negotiate them up front.
- Using an immersion rod as your main water heater. At a few hundred rupees it’s the cheapest hot water there is, but it’s a bare heating element in a bucket with no tank, no thermostat and no real safety - and the recent reviews are full of rods cracking, scaling and in some cases burning. Fine as a rare backup, wrong as the thing you rely on.
- Buying on sticker price over serviceability. The cheapest tank from a brand that won’t answer the phone costs more over its life than a slightly dearer one you can actually get fixed.
- Putting a gas geyser in a sealed bathroom. Not a mistake that costs money. A mistake that can hurt you.
Which geyser for your situation

- A family of four, or showers, or back-to-back baths. Go to 25 litres - especially in a north Indian winter, where cold inlet water eats the margin a 15 litre tank would otherwise have.
- Hard water, or visible scaling on your taps. Buy the tank, not the features: a glass-lined or titanium-enamel inner tank, an anti-scale element, and the longest inner-tank warranty you can get. Then flush it every three to six months.
- A kitchen sink or a single washbasin. A 3 to 6 litre instant heater - fast, cheap and exactly right for a tap. Don’t expect a shower from it.
- An upper-floor flat or a pump-fed home. Confirm an 8 bar pressure rating and a “high-rise compatible” note, and make sure the safety valve is actually fitted.

- No ventilation at all in the bathroom. Then the gas question is settled for you - buy an electric storage geyser.
- You’ve been burned by bad after-sales before. Weight the service record as heavily as the spec, buy Amazon-fulfilled, and shake the unit down inside the return window. The reviews rank brands on exactly that.
