The quick answer

For most Indian homes the answer is one true-HEPA purifier, with a CADR of at least twice your room’s floor area in square feet, running in a room you can shut - and a filter whose price you looked up before you paid for the machine. For a standard 150 sq ft bedroom that means roughly 300 m3/h of clean air delivery, which is a mid-market unit rather than a flagship one. Where you put it matters more than what you spend: the bedroom, because that is eight uninterrupted hours of breathing, not the living room where you spend three distracted ones.

The honest “but” is about what the category cannot do. A purifier cleans the room it is in, with the door closed, and that is the whole of it - it will not clean your flat, it will not keep up with an open window, and in the worst NCR winter air the returns diminish exactly when you want them most. If your main problem is cooking smoke, the fix is a working kitchen chimney. If it is a damp, musty smell, the fix is the damp. And if you were hoping one unit shuttled between rooms would cover the house, it will not; it will simply never be running in the room you just left.

Everything below is how to work out which unit you actually need: the arithmetic that turns your room’s size into a CADR figure, the filter stack decoded into the three things it does and the two it does not, and the running cost nobody quotes at the till. The four numbers that actually matter

Strip out the badges and this decision comes down to four things.

  • CADR against your room’s floor area. Not the coverage claim. This is the only number that tells you how fast the air actually gets cleaner, and it is the one brands print smallest.
  • The filter grade, stated as a grade. “True HEPA” or “H13” means something. “HEPA-type” means the opposite of what it looks like.
  • The replacement filter’s price multiplied by how often you need it. You are buying a multi-year subscription with a machine attached. Price the subscription first.
  • The noise at the speed you will actually run it. Nearly every unit is quiet in sleep mode. The relevant question is what it sounds like on the speed that clears the room, because on a bad night that is the speed you need.

What matters less than the aisle suggests: the capture percentage. Every genuine HEPA filter captures 99.97 per cent at 0.3 micron - that is the definition, not an achievement, so “99.97%” and “99.99%” on two different boxes separate nothing. Stage counts are similarly hollow: a “7-stage” purifier is usually a three-layer filter with an ioniser and a UV lamp counted generously. And unlike an AC or a fridge, an air purifier carries no BEE star rating, so there is no efficiency badge to shop by and no running-cost league table to consult. The wattage spread across the whole category is about 20 to 50 watts, which settles nothing.

Step 1: Work out the CADR your room needs

This is the calculation the category is built to help you avoid, and it takes about a minute.

CADR - clean air delivery rate - is the volume of genuinely clean air a unit delivers per hour. Indian listings quote it in cubic metres per hour (m3/h); American ones quote cubic feet per minute (cfm), and the two differ by a factor of about 1.7, so never compare the raw numbers across a US and an Indian listing.

The reference rule comes from AHAM, the American home-appliance body that certifies CADR: your purifier’s CADR in cfm should be at least two-thirds of your room’s floor area in square feet. At a standard 8 ft ceiling that delivers roughly 4.8 air changes an hour, which is the level allergists commonly recommend, and it is close to the 5 air changes an hour the US CDC settled on as a minimum for occupied indoor spaces. Converted for Indian listings, the AHAM floor is about 1.1 times your floor area, in m3/h.

That is a floor, and in India it is too low. Two reasons. First, CADR is measured in a sealed, empty test chamber; a real room with a sofa, curtains and people in it moves air worse. Second, and specific to us, the outdoor air keeps coming back in - the Delhi household modelling study assumed an ordinary apartment exchanging air with outside 1.5 times an hour, and a purifier has to out-run that continuously, not clean once and stop. So the working number for an Indian home is twice the floor area in m3/h, which is around nine air changes an hour, and three times if your city spends its winter in GRAP “severe” territory or your room is leaky.

Do it in three steps:

  1. Measure the room’s floor area in square feet. Length times breadth. Ignore the “hall plus bedroom” fantasy - measure the one room you will actually keep the door shut in.
  2. Multiply by 2 for a normal room in a normal city, or by 3 if you are in the NCR winter, near a construction site or a main road, or the room does not seal well. That is your target CADR in m3/h.
  3. Check the number is stated at all. If a listing quotes only “covers up to X sq ft” and no CADR, treat the omission as information.

Read the bottom two rows carefully, because they contain the real constraint: most air purifiers sold in India top out around 400 to 420 m3/h. So a genuine 300 sq ft living room is already at the edge of what one mainstream unit can do properly, and a 450 sq ft open-plan space cannot be served by one of them at all. Your options there are two units, or one unit and honestly fewer air changes than you wanted - not a bigger claim on a box.

Where CADR is independently checked, it is worth more. AHAM’s Verifide programme has units pulled from production at random each year and retested, and they must land within 90 per cent of their certified smoke and dust figures to keep the mark. Most units sold in India are not in that programme, so their CADR is manufacturer-stated. That is not a reason to ignore it - it is a reason to weight a brand’s honesty about everything else.

Step 2: The filter stack, in plain English

Three layers do three different jobs, and the marketing runs them together into a “stage count” that means nothing.

The pre-filter is a washable mesh that catches hair, visible dust and lint. It is the cheap layer whose only purpose is protecting the expensive one behind it, and rinsing it every couple of weeks is the highest-return maintenance in the category.

The HEPA layer does the actual particle work, and this is where the grade matters. Under the European EN 1822 standard, H13 means at least 99.95 per cent efficiency at the most penetrating particle size - the size hardest for a filter to catch, typically 0.1 to 0.2 micron - and H14 means 99.995 per cent. What makes those numbers trustworthy is that each filter is tested at its own most penetrating size rather than a flattering fixed one. What you want to spot is the absence of a grade: “HEPA-type” and “HEPA-like” are not grades at all. They describe media in the MERV 13 to 16 range, roughly 75 to 95 per cent efficient. That sounds close and is not - a 95 per cent filter passes 50,000 particles per million where a 99.97 per cent one passes 30.

The activated carbon layer handles gases and smells - cooking odour, pet smell, paint, solvents - by adsorbing molecules onto its surface. Two things about it are routinely oversold. It is weak on the very light compounds, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in particular, which carbon alone does not remove efficiently. And it saturates: once the surface sites are full it stops working entirely, and a thin carbon layer in a cheap unit can reach that point within weeks in a normal home, after which it can even release what it held when conditions change. Carbon is also degraded by humidity above about 60 per cent, which describes most of coastal India for half the year.

On that last row: ionisers and electrostatic stages generate ozone as a by-product, and ozone is a respiratory irritant. The accepted ceiling for an indoor air cleaner is 50 parts per billion - it is California’s statutory limit for cleaners sold there, and it is the same figure India’s own air-purifier specification sets. Mainstream brands design to it. The product to avoid outright is the standalone ozone generator, which shows up in air-purifier searches and is a different and genuinely unsafe device for an occupied room.

Step 3: Price the filter before you price the purifier

An air purifier is a subscription with a machine attached, and the machine is the smaller cheque over five years. This is the step buyers skip and regret.

The Indian market splits fairly cleanly. Mainstream replacement sets for the popular Philips, Xiaomi, Honeywell, Coway and Eureka Forbes models run roughly ₹1,000 to ₹2,500, with a genuine premium-series cartridge going up to about ₹4,850. Compatible third-party sets sit at the lower end of that. Against a one-to-two-year replacement cycle, that is a manageable few hundred rupees a month of ownership.

What blows the budget is buying outside that market. Replacement filters for the American brands that flood Indian search results - the Levoit, Winix, GermGuardian and similar listings - run anywhere from ₹3,000 to over ₹16,000 a set on Amazon India, because they are imported alongside the machine. That is the real cost of a grey-market purifier, and it arrives a year after the pleasant purchase.

Three checks before you commit:

  • Find the exact replacement filter on sale, today, at a price you can see. If you cannot find it, that is your answer about year two.
  • Divide the filter price by its stated life to get a rupees-per-year figure, and compare units on that rather than on sticker price. A dearer machine with an 8,500-hour filter can be cheaper to own than a budget one you re-filter annually.
  • Check whether owners report the stated life holding up. In the air purifier review we found models where buyers were replacing filters in two to three months against a twelve-month claim - that is a three-fold error in the running cost, and it only shows up in ownership reports.

Step 4: Sensors, displays and what “smart” is worth

The air-quality readout is the feature buyers fixate on and the one that most often flatters a weaker machine.

Most on-board sensors in this price class are infrared, which reliably detect only particles above about a micron and are thrown off by humidity and temperature swings. Laser sensors, used in better units, resolve down to about 0.3 micron - the size that actually matters for PM2.5. So the crisp three-digit number on the front panel of a budget unit is an estimate produced by a component that costs a few hundred rupees, and owners regularly report sensors staying green with incense burning in the room. A four-colour LED on a well-built unit is not worse information than a fake precision.

Two India-specific things about auto mode are worth knowing before you rely on it. First, in genuinely extreme air, some units throttle back on auto and sleep exactly when they should be working hardest - owners of budget models report that only the maximum speed pulls the number down on a 500-plus AQI night, which is the night you left it on sleep. Second, and this catches people out: several purifiers have no auto-restart. After a power cut, or after your inverter switches over, the unit is simply off, and the fan speed, auto mode and oscillation all need setting again by hand. In a home with daily cuts that is a daily annoyance, and it is not on any spec sheet.

App control and voice assistants are genuinely useful if you will use them, and genuinely irrelevant if you will not. What is worth more than either is a filter-change indicator you can trust and a child lock if there are small hands in the house.

The trap at the bottom is buying a machine that is not one. An Amazon India search for “air purifier” returns aroma diffusers, cool-mist humidifiers, car purifiers, charcoal deodorising bags and a filter sheet that “converts your split AC into an air purifier” - all under ₹3,000, none of them a room air purifier.

The trap at the top is the import listing. The same search returns American-market units at ₹23,000, ₹36,000, ₹43,000, even over ₹1 lakh - brands with enormous review counts pooled from their US listings, no Indian service route, filters that cost several times the local equivalent, and in some cases hardware built for 110V mains rather than our 230V. Placement, sealing and the service reality

The best evidence we have on purifiers in Indian homes comes with a caveat attached, and the caveat is the most useful part of it. When researchers measured purifiers in Delhi homes through a winter, they taped plastic over the AC sleeve and the window hole, kept the doors shut and did no cooking or cleaning during the tests - and described that as a best-case scenario. Outdoor pollution still tracked straight through: every 10,000-particle rise outside pushed indoor counts up by about 3,000.

So the room does more work than the machine. Seal the obvious leaks - the gap around a window AC or an exhaust fan, the space under the door - and keep the door closed while it runs. Then place the unit sensibly: 20 to 30 cm of clearance on the intake sides, out of a corner and away from behind furniture, and closer to the bed than across the room, since the air at your pillow is the air that matters.

The other half of the decision is dull and decides more: can you get this thing serviced and re-filtered in your city? The pattern in owner reports is consistent. Brands that run their own engineer network - Coway services with its own people across roughly 90 offices in India - generate ownership reports about free installs and home visits. Brands that outsource to contractors, or run IVR-only helplines with no technician dispatch, generate reports about tickets sitting for weeks in the middle of pollution season. That difference is invisible on a spec sheet and it is the single most reliable predictor of whether you will still be happy in year three.

Running cost and maintenance

The electricity is the part people worry about and the part that does not matter. Home purifiers draw roughly 20 to 50 watts. A 40-watt unit running 12 hours a day uses about 14 to 15 units a month; a frugal 25-watt one, about 9. Even running flat out around the clock, a 50-watt unit is around 36 units a month. Apply your own tariff and it is a modest line on the bill. There is no BEE star label here, so this is not a spec to shop on.

The maintenance is three habits, and the first one is worth more than the other two combined:

  • Rinse or vacuum the pre-filter every couple of weeks. It is free, it takes two minutes, and it directly extends the life of the filter you pay for. In a home with pets or near a construction site, do it weekly - it loads up visibly.
  • Change the HEPA cartridge when the indicator says so, not when you get around to it. A clogged filter stops cleaning and makes the motor work harder against the resistance.
  • Do not run it with the pre-filter still wet. Let it dry fully before it goes back in, or you are pushing damp air through the HEPA media, which is the fastest way to make a filter smell.

One thing owners consistently underestimate: filter life claims assume ordinary air and ordinary hours. Run a unit 16 hours a day through a north Indian winter and the cartridge will not last its rated year, and no warranty covers that - it is just how filters work.

What an air purifier cannot do

Four expectations worth resetting, because all four generate complaints that are not faults.

It will not clean your flat. It cleans the room it is in, with the door shut. Clean air does not travel down a corridor in any useful quantity, and a unit sized for a bedroom, placed in an open-plan flat, is simply an undersized unit. One purifier per room you care about is the honest model.

It will not out-run an open window. The Delhi research is unambiguous that outdoor infiltration continues regardless of what the purifier is doing, and the effect gets stronger as outside air worsens. Every gap is a leak, and a purifier fighting one is a purifier losing.

It will not replace a kitchen chimney. Cooking generates particles and grease-laden gases at a rate no room purifier is designed to absorb, and running one in an open kitchen mostly consumes filter life. Extract the smoke at the source; purify the rooms you sleep in.

It will not deal with formaldehyde or a damp problem. Activated carbon does not efficiently remove the very light compounds, and no filter addresses the cause of a musty smell - that is moisture, and it needs fixing rather than filtering.

Common mistakes

  • Buying on the coverage claim instead of the CADR. “Covers up to 500 sq ft” usually means one slow air change an hour. It is the single most common sizing error in the category.
  • Reading the 99.97 per cent badge as a differentiator. It is the definition of HEPA. Every genuine unit hits it, so it separates nothing.
  • Not looking up the replacement filter price first. The filter is the real cost of ownership, and the nastiest surprises are the units whose filters cost thousands or cannot be found at all.
  • Buying the imported bargain with the enormous review count. Those reviews are pooled from another country, the service does not exist here, and the filters cost several times the local equivalent.
  • Sizing one unit for a whole flat. It is not a whole-home system and shuttling it between rooms means it is never running where you are not.
  • Trusting auto and sleep mode on the worst night of the year. Several units throttle back exactly when the air is at its worst. On a bad night, run it on a high speed for a while and then drop it.
  • Ignoring the dust the purifier cannot reach. A purifier catches airborne particles, not what has already settled into carpets and upholstery, and each time you disturb them they go back into the air - a decent vacuum cleaner is doing half the job here.
  • Skipping the pre-filter rinse. It is the free maintenance that protects the expensive filter, and almost nobody does it on schedule.

Size it on CADR, not on the coverage claim. Measure your room's floor area in square feet, then look for a clean air delivery rate in cubic metres per hour of at least twice that number - so a 150 sq ft bedroom wants around 300 m3/h, a 200 sq ft room around 400, and a 300 sq ft living room around 600. That works out to roughly nine air changes an hour at a standard 8 ft ceiling, which is deliberately above the AHAM 2/3 rule's minimum of about 4.8 air changes, because Indian outdoor air keeps leaking back in and a furnished room moves air worse than a test chamber does. Do air purifiers actually work in Delhi and NCR pollution?

Yes, in one sealed room, and the research is specific about how much. A modelling study of urban Delhi households put average personal PM2.5 exposure at 103 micrograms per cubic metre in a non-smoking home against an ambient 123, and found that all-day HEPA filter use brought that down to 29 - a reduction associated with an 8 to 37 per cent drop in PM2.5-attributable mortality. Effectively, yes - a purifier cleans the room it is in, with the door shut, and that is the honest limit of the product. Clean air does not meaningfully travel down a corridor into another bedroom, and a unit sized for 300 sq ft placed in a 900 sq ft flat with the doors open is simply an undersized unit. Separately, IS 17531:2021, 'Portable Electric Indoor Air Purifier - Specification', published by BIS in April 2021, is the performance standard: it defines how CADR should be tested, along with filter efficiency, ozone limits and labelling. The practical caveat is that most CADR figures you read on Indian listings are manufacturer-stated rather than independently verified, so treat them as a comparison tool between honest brands rather than a certified measurement.

Where should I place an air purifier in a room?

Near where you actually breathe, with room around it, and with the door shut. Leave 20 to 30 cm of clearance on the intake sides and do not push it into a corner or behind a sofa, where it will mostly recirculate the clean air it just produced. In a bedroom, closer to the bed is better than across the room, since the point is the air at your pillow rather than an average for the whole space. The bigger factor is the room itself: the Delhi field study that measured purifiers in real homes described a taped-up window and closed doors as a best-case scenario, and even then outdoor pollution tracked straight through. Sealing the obvious gaps - the AC sleeve, the exhaust vent, the gap under the door - does more for your result than repositioning the unit by a metre.
