The webcam aisle sells resolution and almost nothing else. “4K UHD” on a ₹1,999 camera is an interpolation claim, not a sensor, and the budget shelf is full of them - the bestselling cheap 4K models draw more one-star reviews than everything else combined, most of them variations on “stopped working”. Resolution is not where the money goes: sensor size and lens quality are, which is why a genuine 1080p camera at ₹3,200 looks better than a claimed-4K one at half the price, and why most video-calling platforms will compress you back down to 720p anyway. Read the resolution number last.
The two things that actually decide whether you are happy are duller. The first is focus behaviour. Cheap autofocus hunts - it drifts in and out mid-call, and on several models it cannot be switched off, which owners discover only after buying. Fixed-focus cameras never hunt, but they are tuned for a face at desk distance and will blur a document held up to the lens, which matters more in India than the brochures assume: online exams, remote interviews and video KYC all ask you to hold up an ID card. The second is who is on the hook when the camera fails. Read the importer of record on the listing - some of these are backed by a distributor and a toll-free line, others by one individual’s mobile number - and weigh a stated warranty against how the brand actually behaves in the reviews when someone claims it.
