Mattresses

A mattress is the most expensive thing in the bedroom and the one sold on the least useful vocabulary. Ortho, spine-align, pressure zones, ten-year warranty. What decides whether you wake up sore is firmness - and it is the one thing the listings describe least honestly.

How to choose a mattress in India

Every argument about mattresses is really an argument about firmness, and firmness is where this aisle is least trustworthy. The word orthopedic is not a certification and carries no firmness rating - it appears on medium-soft foam as readily as on hard coir. Read the one-star reviews on any product labelled ortho and the same complaint comes back in a dozen phrasings: I wanted firm, I got soft, my back is worse. Almost none of those are defective mattresses. They are people who bought a word instead of a number. The useful reads are the firmness field in the specification table, the core material, and what owners of your own build say six months in.

The second thing we weight is what happens in year two and three, because that is when foam that looked identical on day one separates. Sagging is the universal failure - a dip where the heaviest part of you rests, which no amount of rotating fixes - and it is also the failure every brand’s ten-year warranty is written to survive. Sleepwell and Kurlon publish the threshold on their own listings: a depression has to exceed 37 mm on a mattress thicker than 125 mm before the warranty engages. Owners describe being measured at 2.2 cm and refused. Most brands do not publish a threshold at all, which is worse, not better.

The third thing is heat, and it is specific to this country in a way international mattress advice never accounts for. Memory foam wraps the body and blocks airflow, and in a bedroom without air conditioning through May that is not a footnote - owners describe waking in the middle of the night because the mattress has become the problem. Natural latex and coir both breathe far better, and owner language in those categories changes accordingly. If you sleep hot, that single consideration should outrank the brand, the layer count and the marketing name.
