The honest “but” is that “vacuum cleaner” covers five genuinely different machines, and for most people four of them are the wrong answer. A robot maintains a clean floor rather than creating one. The four things that actually matter

Strip out the badges and the decision comes down to four things, in this order.

  • The form factor. It decides more than brand, price or suction. Buy the wrong type well and you will still be unhappy.
  • Sealed suction in kPa, or air watts. Not watts. The number brands print smallest, and the only one describing how hard the machine pulls.
  • The duty cycle the motor is built for. How long it runs before it needs to rest separates a machine that lasts three years from one that dies in three months, and it is almost never on the product page.
  • Whether the brand will repair it. Motors and batteries fail. On too many brands the repair quote arrives higher than the machine cost.

What matters less than the aisle suggests: motor wattage, a bill number rather than a cleaning one. The attachment count - you will use two, possibly three. The headline Pascal figure on robots, inflated past the point of meaning anything. And the word HEPA on its own, which without a sealed system around it describes a filter fine dust simply flows around. Five machines, one word. Work out which one you are buying before you look at a single model. A dry canister trades wet pickup for finer filtration and a better carpet nozzle. A robot is a scheduling device more than a cleaning one. The most common expensive mistake here is buying a robot as a first and only vacuum. It is the machine people want, and it is the wrong first purchase for a home that has never been properly vacuumed, because a robot maintains a clean floor rather than creating one. Step 2: Read the suction number properly

This is where the category does most of its lying, and it does it in three different units.

Watts is how much electricity the motor draws. It appears in the largest font on almost every Indian listing and it tells you nothing about cleaning. kPa (kilopascals) is sealed suction pressure - how hard the machine pulls against a blocked hose. It is the most widely quoted useful figure in India, and roughly 10 kPa is the commonly cited working floor, with about 15 kPa suggested for thick carpet or pets. In practice, 18 to 25 kPa is genuinely strong for a corded machine. Air watts combines airflow with lift and is the more complete measure where a brand quotes it: about 180 to 300 for corded, 80 to 150 for cordless. Robots are quoted in plain pascals, where 10,000 Pa is simply 10 kPa.

The robot figure is where inflation has run furthest. Standard robots historically sat around 1,000 to 2,000 Pa and premium ones around 4,000 to 8,000 Pa, and yet Indian listings today run from 10,000 Pa on a mainstream machine to 13,000 on a sub-₹20,000 one, then 25,000, 30,000 and 31,000 Pa at the top. These are peak figures no robot sustains across a normal pass, and once you are past roughly 4,000 Pa on hard floors the difference stops being something you can see.

Step 3: Check your wall socket before you check the reviews

This is the section a globally written buying guide cannot have, and it decides which machines are even available to you.

Under IS 1293, the Indian plug and socket standard, domestic sockets are rated 2.5A, 6A or 16A at up to 250 V. Do the arithmetic and a 6A point - the ordinary round-pin socket in most rooms - tops out around 1,500 W, while a 16A point, the wide one your AC or geyser uses, goes to about 4,000 W. The 16A plug is also physically larger, with wider and longer pins set further apart, so it will not fit a 6A socket at all.

Now look at what the Indian vacuum aisle actually sells. Corded machines here are routinely rated 1,600 W, 1,900 W, even 2,200 W, because wattage sells. Work through it in this order before you shortlist anything:

  1. Walk the rooms you will actually clean and note which sockets are 6A and which are 16A. Most flats have 16A points only near the AC, the geyser and sometimes the kitchen.
  2. Check the cord reach against those points. A 5-metre cord from the one 16A socket in the bedroom does not clean the living room.
  3. Filter your shortlist by wattage. Anything at or above roughly 1,400 W wants a 16A point or a properly rated adaptor, not an extension board rated for lamps.
  4. If you only have 6A sockets, prefer a machine around 1,000 W with a strong kPa figure. This is the practical argument for judging on suction rather than watts, and it costs you nothing in cleaning power.

Step 4: Filtration, and the word that actually matters

A vacuum that lifts dust off the floor and blows the fine fraction back into the room has moved your dust rather than removed it, which is the failure mode nobody notices because it is invisible.

The grades are worth knowing precisely. True HEPA, in the American definition, removes 99.97 per cent of particles at 0.3 micron - the most penetrating particle size, the hardest for a filter to catch. The European EN 1822 system is more granular: H13 is at least 99.95 per cent and H14 at least 99.995 per cent, with True HEPA sitting between the two in practice. What you want to spot is the absence of a grade. “HEPA-type” and “HEPA-like” have no standard behind them at all and often describe media that is only 90 to 95 per cent efficient, and both phrases appear on Indian listings at ₹2,400.

The specification that decides whether any of that matters is a sealed system: all the air drawn in is expelled through the filter, with none leaking past it. Without sealing, fine dust simply escapes around the bin lid, the hose joint and the filter mount, and the filter grade becomes a sticker. Proper sealing is also why an H14-grade machine costs meaningfully more to build - the figure quoted in the trade is around a 40 per cent hardware premium over a basic setup. Step 5: If you’re buying a robot

Robots are the fastest-growing part of the Indian market and the part where the spec sheet correlates least with satisfaction. Four things predict whether you will still be running it in year two.

Navigation. The ladder runs random-bump, then gyroscope, then solid-fixed laser, then full LiDAR, then camera-assisted. Below laser navigation the robot is guessing, which means missed patches and runs that take three times as long. LiDAR is the sensible floor for a machine you intend to run daily, and it starts around ₹13,000 in India.

Thresholds. Most robots manage a height change of only about 2 cm. Fine for a modern flat with flush tiling, a problem in a house with old-style wooden door sills or a raised bathroom kerb. Measure your worst threshold before you buy, because no setting fixes a robot that physically cannot climb.

Dark floors. Entry-level cliff sensors misread dark tiles and dark carpet edges as a staircase and refuse to cross. LiDAR and camera models cope; the field workaround for a stubborn dark rug edge is a strip of white masking tape the robot will cross instead.

The station. A self-emptying base extends bin duty from every two or three days to roughly four to six weeks, the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade in the class - in India it usually costs above ₹28,000, with full “Omni” stations that also wash and hot-air-dry the mop pad starting around ₹37,000. Two India-specific realities the brochures skip. Mopping on mainstream robots is a light drag-wipe, not a scrub - owners consistently rate the vacuuming well above it, and a dried stain needs a human. And a power cut can leave the robot stranded mid-room, unable to find its dock, which owners of even well-reviewed models report. If your area has daily cuts, that is a daily retrieval, not a one-off.

Step 6: If you’re buying cordless

The cordless stick is bought for one honest reason - a machine with no cable gets used far more often than one with - and it is sold on one dishonest number.

Runtime headlines are quoted on the lowest setting. Max-mode runtime is typically about half the normal-mode figure, and on real machines the drop is worse: a popular Indian cordless quotes roughly 45 minutes on low, about 20 on medium and around eight minutes on full suction, then needs about five hours to recharge. The battery is a wear part. Lithium packs in this class are generally good for 300 to 500 charge cycles, or two to five years, after which capacity falls off a cliff. The trap at the top is the inflated duplicate listing. Overheating, and the maintenance that prevents it

More vacuums die of heat in India than of anything else, and almost all of it is preventable.

The mechanism is simple: vacuum motors are cooled by the air flowing through them. Restrict that airflow and you remove the cooling and raise the load at the same time. A clogged filter alone can lift motor core temperature by around 20 degrees Celsius in under ten minutes, and a partial blockage can add 20 to 35 per cent to internal motor load. Sustained, that degrades the windings, warps plastics and fails connections.

Most machines carry a thermal protection switch that cuts the motor when it overheats. If yours shuts off and restarts once cool, that is the protection working, not a defect - but it is also a warning you are running it wrong. The dull half of this decision outlasts the exciting half.

One year is the category norm in India, and it is short for an appliance with a motor and, increasingly, a battery.   • Reading “HEPA” without checking for a sealed system. An unsealed machine leaks fine dust around the filter, and “HEPA-type” is not a grade at all.

Standard robots have historically sat around 1,000 to 2,000 Pa and premium models around 4,000 to 8,000 Pa, yet Indian listings now run from 10,000 Pa on a mainstream machine up to 25,000, 30,000 and even 31,000 Pa at the top of the market. Those headline numbers are peak sealed-suction figures the robot cannot sustain on a normal cleaning pass, and they say nothing about brush design, edge reach or whether the map holds. For mostly hard floors, which describes most Indian homes, anything from roughly 4,000 Pa upward clears daily dust perfectly well, and beyond that you are paying for carpet performance you may not need. Weight navigation quality, an anti-tangle brush and the service network far more heavily than the Pascal figure.

Should I buy a bagged or bagless vacuum cleaner?

Bagged if anyone in the house has allergies, bagless if you would rather not buy consumables. A bag contains the dust at the moment of disposal, which is precisely when a bagless bin releases a cloud of what you just collected, and suction stays more consistent through a session because the filling bag adds filtration layers rather than choking a cyclone. Bagged machines also tend to be mechanically simpler and to outlast bagless ones. The trade-off is a recurring cost and the fact that most vacuum bags are not recyclable. Bagless removes the running cost and the risk of finding your bag is out of stock, but it leans harder on rubber seals and cyclonic separation, and you will be washing filters. If you go bagless, check that the filter is washable and that replacements are actually on sale in India before you commit.

Do I need a HEPA filter vacuum cleaner?

Only if the system around the filter is sealed, otherwise the badge is decorative. True HEPA in the American definition removes 99.97 per cent of particles at 0.3 micron, while the European EN 1822 grades put H13 at 99.95 per cent and H14 at 99.995 per cent. The phrases to distrust are 'HEPA-type' and 'HEPA-like', which have no standard behind them at all and often describe media that is only 90 to 95 per cent efficient. Even a genuine HEPA element does nothing if unfiltered air escapes around the bin lid, the hose joint or the filter mount, which is why the specification that matters is a sealed system - all the air drawn in is expelled through the filter with none leaking past. For an allergy or asthma household, look for a sealed system stated explicitly; for a normal home with hard floors, a washable filter you clean on schedule matters more.

Can a cordless stick vacuum be my only vacuum cleaner?

For most homes, no, and the reason is the gap between the headline runtime and the useful one. Max-mode runtime is typically about half the normal-mode figure, and on real machines the drop is steeper than that: a popular Indian cordless quotes about 45 minutes on low but only around eight minutes on full suction, then takes roughly five hours to recharge. That is enough for a daily once-over and not enough to deep-clean a house in one session. The battery is also a wear part, generally good for 300 to 500 charge cycles or two to five years, so plan for a replacement and check before you buy whether that replacement is actually sourceable for your model in India. Treat a cordless stick as the machine that gets used often because it is convenient, alongside a corded one that does the heavy work.

Do vacuum cleaners need BIS or ISI certification in India?

They are about to, and the deadline is worth knowing because it is a useful screening tool. Vacuum cleaners and water-suction cleaning appliances fall under IS 302 (Part 1): 2024, the general safety standard for household electrical appliances harmonised with IEC 60335-1:2020, with IS 302 (Part 2/Sec 2) covering the vacuum-specific requirements for appliances rated up to 250 V. Under the Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2025, ISI certification becomes mandatory from 19 March 2026 for general manufacturers, 19 June 2026 for small enterprises and 19 September 2026 for micro enterprises, after which uncertified units cannot be manufactured, imported or sold. In practice that means a no-name listing with no BIS licence is one to skip, and imports without ISI will not clear customs.

How often should I clean or replace a vacuum cleaner filter?

More often than you think, because filter neglect is what kills vacuum motors. Check and tap out the primary filter every few uses and wash it whenever the manual allows, letting it dry completely before it goes back in - a damp filter both restricts airflow and starts to smell. In an Indian home near a main road or a construction site, where road dust and soil can account for more than half the ambient PM10 in dry seasons, that schedule needs to be weekly rather than monthly. Replace rather than wash when the media has visibly greyed through or the pleats have collapsed, and always keep a spare bag or filter for a bagged machine so a stock-out never becomes a reason to run it choked. The cheapest maintenance habit in the category is also the one that most reliably prevents a motor failure.
