The chimney aisle sells two numbers - suction and warranty years - and both are closer to marketing than measurement. Here is what actually decides whether you still like the thing in year three, starting with the pipe behind it.
The quick answer
For most Indian kitchens, buy a 60cm chimney rated 1000-1200 m3/hr, ducted outside through the shortest pipe run you can manage, from a brand with a service centre in your city. Whether you spend around Rs 7,000 on a simple baffle unit or around Rs 15,000 on a filterless BLDC one comes down to a single question: how much do you hate cleaning a greasy steel filter by hand?
The honest “but” has three cases. If you fry heavily every day or have a 4-burner hob, you want 90cm and 1200-1500 m3/hr, and you will pay for it in noise. If you have no exterior wall to vent through, a ductless chimney is a compromise you should walk into with your eyes open rather than a solution. And if you are in a rental where drilling a 6-inch hole is a conversation with your landlord, that conversation happens before you order anything.

There is a reason to get this right beyond a clean kitchen. A 2025 study in the Global NEST Journal that monitored PM2.5 continuously across 58 urban homes in Bengaluru found cooking contributed around 26 per cent of daily indoor PM2.5 exposure, that the hour after cooking is the critical exposure window, and that only 15 per cent of cooking events used a range hood at all. Running the thing you bought, and running it for a few minutes after you switch off the flame, more than doubled the rate at which the particulates cleared.
The five numbers that actually matter
Strip out the badges and the decision comes down to five things.
- Hood width against your hob width. 60cm or 90cm. This is the one spec that cannot be compensated for by anything else on the sheet.
- Real suction after the duct, not the number on the box. The rated m3/hr is a lab measurement taken with no duct attached; your pipe and its bends take a real bite out of it.
- Motor type. BLDC or ordinary AC. This decides your noise and, to a smaller extent, your electricity bill.
- The comprehensive warranty in months - specifically the PCB line - not the motor headline.
- Whether the brand services your city. A chimney is bolted to a wall. You cannot carry it to a shop.
And the numbers that are mostly noise: suction past about 1200 m3/hr on a 60cm hood (you are buying volume you cannot use and decibels you can hear), the “5-stage filter” style stage counts, mood lighting, and the difference between a rated 58 dB and a rated 59 dB, both of which are low-speed figures anyway.
Step 1: Ducted or ductless
This is the first fork, and it is decided by your wall, not your budget.
A ducted chimney vents smoke, grease, heat and moisture outside through a pipe. That is what a chimney is for. A ductless (recirculating) one has no outlet: it passes air through a charcoal filter and blows it back into the room, removing some odour and leaving everything else exactly where it was.

That 50-70 per cent figure is the one to sit with: a 1200 m3/hr ductless unit is doing something closer to 600-840 in your kitchen, and it is doing it while returning the heat. Owners of the popular ductless models in our review repeatedly report smoke lingering, with some saying an ordinary exhaust fan did better.
Buy ductless only when ducting is genuinely impossible - a rental with no exterior access, a flat where the society will not permit a wall opening. If you do, size up: pick something rated 1200 m3/hr or higher so that after the filter loss you still have a working chimney, and put the charcoal replacements in your budget from day one.
Step 2: The duct run decides your real suction
This is the section nobody writing about chimneys bothers with, and it matters more than the 200 m3/hr you are agonising over on the spec sheet.
The rated suction figure is measured in a lab with the outlet open to air. In your kitchen that air has to travel through a pipe, around bends, and out through a wall. Every one of those costs you airflow.
- Diameter. Six inches (150mm) is standard for a 60cm chimney. Go to eight inches (200mm) for a 90cm or high-suction unit, or for a longer-than-usual run.
- Bends. Each 90-degree bend costs roughly 10-15 per cent of airflow. Two bends and you have quietly given back more than the difference between an 1100 and a 1500 unit.
- Length. Keep the total run under about 3-4 metres and to no more than two bends. One guide puts the sweet spot at 6-10 feet with each additional foot costing 5-8 per cent.
- Material. Smooth-walled rigid aluminium or galvanised duct beats the flexible corrugated pipe installers like, because every ridge is friction.
Plan the run before you pick the model, in this order:
- Find your exit point. An existing ventilator or exhaust-fan opening is ideal - no core cutting, no argument with the society.
- Measure the straight-line distance from directly above your hob to that opening.
- Count the turns you cannot avoid. Two is your ceiling. If you need three, either move the exit or accept that you are buying a bigger motor to pay for the bends.
- Pick the diameter from the chimney’s outlet size, and do not let anyone step you down to a narrower pipe to make a fitting easier.
- Now choose the suction rating, sized for the kitchen you have plus a margin for the losses you just counted.
A shorter, straighter, wider duct does more for what you actually feel at the hob than another 300 on the box. If a technician tells you the pipe run does not matter, he is telling you he wants to finish before lunch.
Step 3: Sizing - hood width and how much suction
Two decisions, and the first is simple.
Width follows the hob. A 60cm chimney suits a 2-burner or small 3-burner stove; a 90cm is for a 4-burner or wider hob. The 90cm gives you roughly 15cm of extra capture area on each side, which is the whole point - smoke rising off the outer burners of a wide hob escapes past a narrow hood no matter how strong the motor is. Match the chimney to whatever you have over there, whether that is a 4-burner gas stove or a compact two-burner from our gas stove picks .
Suction follows the room and how you cook. The standard method is kitchen volume multiplied by air changes per hour:
- Measure your kitchen’s length, width and height in metres and multiply them. A 4m x 3m x 3m kitchen is 36 cubic metres.
- Multiply by 10-15 air changes an hour. That gives 360-540 m3/hr.
- Add 25-40 per cent for Indian cooking - the oil, the tadka, the spices. Call it 450-750 m3/hr.
- Add margin for your duct losses from Step 2 (each bend, remember, is 10-15 per cent).
Which tells you something useful and slightly deflating: on paper, almost every branded chimney on sale clears the bar for a normal Indian kitchen. The reason people still buy 1200 and 1500 units is capture at the hood during heavy frying, not air changes across the room.

The 1,000-1,500 m3/hr band dominates the Indian market, which is a reasonable place for most people to land. Just do not confuse a bigger number with a better chimney. Past about 1200 m3/hr on a 60cm hood, the extra mostly arrives as noise.
Step 4: Filter type, or none at all
The second real decision, and the one that shapes your Saturday mornings.
Baffle filters are interlocking curved steel panels arranged so smoke has to change direction repeatedly. Oil loses momentum on the turns, condenses on the panels and drains down. Faber’s own guidance calls them “ideal for Indian cooking” for exactly this reason, notes they last longer than cassette filters because they clog less, and points out they are dishwasher-safe. You unclip and degrease them roughly every three to four weeks.
Cassette or mesh filters - the same thing under two names - are layers of aluminium or steel mesh. Faber is unusually blunt about these: they are for “light cooking, such as boiling or steaming” and are “not as effective as baffle filters in trapping oil and grease”. They clog, they need washing far more often, and eventually they need replacing. In an Indian kitchen, skip them.
Filterless (autoclean) removes the filter from the airflow entirely. A non-stick turbine blower flings oil droplets outward by centrifugal force onto the blower wall; a heating coil around the housing melts the collected grease on demand, and gravity drains it into a removable collector tray. You empty a tray instead of scrubbing panels.

Charcoal is not a fourth option; it is a consumable. Activated charcoal filters exist only to strip odour on ductless setups, cannot be washed, and get replaced every three to four months at roughly Rs 800-1,200 a set. Note also that Faber’s warranty explicitly excludes charcoal filters, metal grease filters, lamps and glass - so consumables are your bill, always.
And a plain admission: autoclean cuts the cleaning, it does not remove it. Across the models in our review, several owners report the cycle underdelivering or oil dripping rather than collecting cleanly. If a brochure implies the chimney cleans itself, it is overselling.
Step 5: Motor, noise and running cost
Two motor types, and the difference is mostly what your kitchen sounds like.
An ordinary AC motor draws roughly 200-250 watts and typically runs at 55-65 dB. A BLDC (brushless DC) motor draws roughly 80-100 watts and sits in the 45-55 dB band. The comfort line quoted across the category is around 58 dB, which puts a lot of ordinary-motor chimneys just the wrong side of pleasant.
The electricity difference is real but small: at two hours a day, a BLDC uses around 7 units a month against around 15 for an ordinary motor. At most Indian tariffs that is the price of a coffee. The reason to pay for BLDC is the noise, not the bill - and the payoff is specifically at the low and mid speeds you actually cook on, which is where the rated dB figures come from.
Here is the part the spec sheet hides: every rated noise figure is a low-speed best case. Owners of the quiet BLDC models in our review consistently say they get loud past the mid settings, and one of the loudest complaints in the entire category is about a 90cm ordinary-motor unit on full power. No chimney on sale in India is quiet wide open. Buy for how it sounds at speed 2, because that is where it will spend its life.
Step 6: Chimney type and how high to mount it
Four body types, and your kitchen picks for you:
- Wall-mounted - the hob is against a wall. This is most Indian kitchens and where nearly all the choice is.
- Island / ceiling-mounted - the hob is in a central island. Needs ceiling ducting and costs more.
- Built-in - integrated into the cabinetry above the hob, so it disappears. Thin selection in India.
- Corner - the hob sits in a corner. A niche shape, and worth confirming stock before you plan a kitchen around it.
Mounting height is 24 to 30 inches (60 to 75cm) above the cooking surface, and for high-flame Indian cooking the usual recommendation lands at 26 to 28 inches. Elica’s guidance sits at 70-75cm. Too high and smoke disperses before the hood catches it; too low and you are cooking under a hot metal box, with the flame closer to the filter than anyone intends. Autoclean models sometimes specify their own height, so read the manual before the drill comes out.
Certification, and the star rating that does not exist
Two pieces of regulation matter here, and one of them is an absence.
BIS is mandatory. Range hoods fall under the Electrical Appliances for Kitchen (Quality Control) Order, 2023, notified on 5 March 2024 and in force from 5 September 2024 for medium and large manufacturers, with nine and twelve month extensions for small and micro enterprises. They must comply with IS 302 (Part 2/Sec 31): 2009 and carry the ISI Standard Mark under a BIS licence. Note that this is the ISI scheme, not the CRS registration used for some other kitchen appliances - you are looking for the actual ISI mark. A no-name chimney that cannot show one is an uncertified mains appliance mounted over an open flame.
There is no BEE star rating on chimneys. BEE’s labelling programme covers air conditioners, ceiling fans, refrigerators, washing machines, water heaters, domestic gas stoves, microwave ovens and a long list besides. Range hoods are not on it. So when a carton promises energy efficiency, that is the manufacturer marking its own homework - there is no government label to compare one chimney against another. Judge running cost by the motor’s wattage instead, which is printed and comparable.
What you will actually spend

The pricing trap is not the sticker - it is what is missing from it. The chimney price almost never includes installation, and frequently does not include the duct pipe. Owners across every major brand report install-plus-pipe charges anywhere from around Rs 600 to Rs 3,000, and if your wall has no existing opening, core cutting is separate labour on top. Budget Rs 1,500-3,000 over the chimney price for a standard ducted install.
For context on the other end of the market: an exhaust fan costs Rs 500-2,000 and moves 200-300 m3/hr against a chimney’s 1000-1400. It clears heat, steam and some smell. It does not capture grease at the hob, so the oil settles on your cabinets on its way to the window. If you fry, they are not substitutes.
Installation and service reality
This is where the category actually disappoints people, and none of it is on the spec sheet.
The install is a separate transaction with a technician who was not part of your buying decision. The recurring pattern in owner reports is the surprise bill, followed by the upsell: extra pipe, unnecessary wall cutting, a “recommended” accessory. Get the full charge confirmed before anyone starts drilling, and buy a good rigid aluminium duct yourself rather than accepting whatever length arrives in the van.
On service, the useful signal is not a brand’s claimed network size but what owners report when something breaks. From the reviews we read for this category: Faber draws the most consistently positive feedback, with prompt installation and responsive technicians named again and again. Elica, the market leader, has the widest reach but a bimodal experience - excellent when a technician turns up, a black hole of unanswered tickets when one does not. Crompton was the weak link, with owners reporting parts not stocked even in metros. For scale on what “network” means in this category, Hindware said in September 2024 that its service expansion covered 180 cities, which sounds like a lot until you check whether yours is one of them.
Do that check before you buy, not after. A chimney you cannot get repaired is a decorative hood.
Running cost and maintenance
The electricity is the least of it. The formula is watts multiplied by hours a day, multiplied by days, divided by 1000, times your tariff. At two hours a day that is around 7 units a month for a BLDC and around 15 for an ordinary motor - somewhere in the range of Rs 50 to Rs 105 a month depending on your state’s tariff, which runs roughly Rs 3 to Rs 12 a unit.
The maintenance is the real cost, and it depends entirely on the choice you made in Step 4:
- Baffle filters: unclip and degrease roughly every three to four weeks. Hot water, dish soap, or the dishwasher if you have one . Free, just tedious.
- Filterless autoclean: empty and wash the oil collector tray on the same sort of cadence, and run the heat cycle when the unit asks. If oil starts appearing anywhere other than the tray, that is a fault, not a chore.
- Charcoal filters (ductless only): replaced, never washed. Roughly Rs 800-1,200 a set every three to four months, which works out to something like Rs 3,000-5,000 over five years.
- Everything: a professional service once or twice a year is what the brands recommend, and it is what keeps the blower from becoming a solid block of old oil.
One habit worth building: leave the chimney running for five to ten minutes after you switch off the flame. The Bengaluru PM2.5 study found the hour after cooking is the elevated-exposure window, and the extractor you already own is the cheapest fix for it.
Common mistakes
- Shopping on the suction number. It is a lab figure with no duct attached. Two 90-degree bends can hand back more than the gap between the model you bought and the one you did not.
- Buying a 90cm because bigger is safer. Over a 2-burner hob it catches nothing extra and it is a louder machine. Match the width to the hob.
- Reading the warranty headline. The 12 or 15 years is the motor. Faber’s own terms put the main PCB at twelve months, and the board is what dies.
- Letting the installer choose the duct. Corrugated flexible pipe, a narrower diameter to make a fitting easier, an extra bend to avoid moving a cabinet - each of those costs you suction you paid for.
- Buying ductless by default because it is easier. It returns the heat, delivers a fraction of its rating, and bills you for charcoal forever. It is a last resort, not a convenience.
- Assuming autoclean means no cleaning. You still empty a tray, and on several popular models owners report the cycle underdelivering.
- Treating an “energy efficient” badge as a rating. There is no BEE star label on chimneys. It is a marketing claim.
- Choosing on sticker price over serviceability. This thing is bolted to a wall. Confirm your city has an authorised service centre before you pay.
- Forgetting to budget for the install. Rs 1,500-3,000 on top is normal, and it surprises nearly everyone.
Which kitchen chimney for your situation
- A normal 2-4 burner kitchen, everyday cooking. 60cm, 1000-1200 m3/hr, ducted. Whether you go baffle or filterless is purely about cleaning. Both ends of that choice are in our kitchen chimney review .
- You fry heavily most days. 1200-1500 m3/hr, and keep a baffle filter in the airflow rather than trusting an autoclean cycle alone. Expect it to be loud, and check the duct run before you buy the bigger motor.
- A 4-burner or wider hob, or an open-plan kitchen. 90cm, 1500-1800 m3/hr. Prioritise a BLDC motor here if the budget stretches, because a big body with an ordinary motor is the loudest thing in this category.
- You want the quietest kitchen you can get. BLDC, and judge it at speed 2 rather than by the number on the box. Nothing here is quiet at full power.
- You hate cleaning filters. Filterless autoclean, and accept two things: the autoclean board is a failure point, and you are still emptying an oil tray.
- You want the fewest things to go wrong. A push-button baffle chimney. No touch panel, no autoclean board, no gesture sensor. It is the cheapest tier and it is also the most reliable one, which is not a coincidence.
- No exterior wall to vent through. Ductless, sized at 1200 m3/hr or higher to survive the filter loss, with charcoal replacements budgeted. Or reconsider whether that ventilator opening really is unusable.
- You are away from a metro. Service reach outranks every spec on this page. Check the brand’s service locator for your pin code first, then shop.
- You cook mostly on induction and want less smoke to begin with. An induction cooktop generates less airborne particulate than a gas flame, though it does not eliminate the grease from what is actually in the pan. You still want extraction; you may not need as much of it.

Should I buy a 60cm or a 90cm kitchen chimney?
Match the width to your hob, not to your wall. A 60cm chimney suits a 2-burner or small 3-burner stove, which covers most Indian kitchens. What height should a kitchen chimney be installed above the gas stove?
The standard range is 24 to 30 inches, or 60 to 75cm, above the cooking surface, and for high-flame Indian cooking the usual sweet spot is 26 to 28 inches. Elica's own guidance sits at 70-75cm. Is a BLDC chimney worth the extra money?
For a chimney you run daily, usually yes. Do kitchen chimneys really come with a 15-year warranty?
Not in the way the listing implies. The long headline number covers the motor alone. Faber's own published warranty terms are the clearest illustration: the base cover is one year comprehensive plus five years on the motor, and the touch button and main PCB carry twelve months from the date of invoice. The control board is the part that actually tends to die, and it has the shortest cover on the card. Faber also excludes charcoal filters, metal grease filters, lamps, glass and outer body parts entirely, and requires lifetime-warranty registration within 30 days of purchase or it is void. Read the comprehensive figure and the PCB line, not the number on the box.
Is installation included when you buy a chimney online?
Usually not, and this is the single most common complaint in the category. The price rarely includes the labour and frequently does not include the aluminium duct pipe either. Owners across every major brand report install-plus-pipe charges anywhere from around Rs 600 to Rs 3,000, and if your wall has no existing opening you may also need core cutting, which is separate labour again. Budget Rs 1,500-3,000 over the chimney price for a standard ducted install, insist on the full quote before the technician starts drilling, and buy your own duct pipe rather than accepting whatever length he happens to have in the van.
Do kitchen chimneys have a BEE star rating in India?
No. BEE's Standards and Labelling programme covers a long list of appliances - air conditioners, ceiling fans, refrigerators, washing machines, water heaters, domestic gas stoves, microwave ovens and more - and range hoods are not on it. So there is no government star label on a chimney to compare one against another, which is exactly why the marketing falls back on suction numbers and filter-stage counts. Any energy-saving badge on a chimney carton is the manufacturer's own claim. What is mandatory is safety certification: range hoods need BIS approval against IS 302 (Part 2/Sec 31): 2009.

A no-name chimney with no traceable ISI mark is an uncertified mains appliance bolted above an open flame, which is not where you want to save Rs 2,000.
Is a kitchen chimney better than an exhaust fan?
For Indian cooking, yes, and it is not close on the numbers. A chimney moves roughly 1000-1400 m3/hr against an exhaust fan's 200-300, which is four to seven times the air. More importantly they do different jobs: a chimney captures grease at the hob, where it is generated, while an exhaust fan sitting in a window pulls air across your whole kitchen and lets the oil settle on your cabinets on the way past. An exhaust fan is fine for heat, steam and smell in a kitchen where you mostly boil things. If you fry and do tadka, the chimney is the right tool, and Rs 500-2,000 of exhaust fan does not substitute for it.
