Three peripherals, three inflated numbers - Hz on the monitor, mechanical-and-RGB on the keyboard, DPI on the mouse. In all three cases the number printed largest is the least useful spec on the box. Here is what decides the buy instead.
The quick answer
For most people building a first proper setup, the answer is a 23.8-inch 1080p IPS monitor at 144Hz to 180Hz, a keyboard in whichever layout you already use, and a mouse light enough for the games you actually play - roughly ₹14,000 to ₹18,000 for all three, with the screen taking most of it. That combination is not a compromise. It is the configuration a budget-to-mid graphics card can genuinely drive, which is the only thing that decides whether you feel the refresh rate you paid for.
The honest buts. If your graphics card is strong enough to hold high frame rates at 1440p, step the monitor up to 27 inches and take the money out of the keyboard, not the mouse. If you game mainly on a PS5 or Xbox, the refresh rate on the box is irrelevant until you have checked the HDMI version, and most affordable panels will cap you at 60Hz. If you play competitive shooters, mouse weight matters more than everything else on this page combined. And if you type for a living as well as game, buy the keyboard for typing and it will be fine for gaming; the reverse is not true.

The five numbers that actually matter
This aisle competes on the wrong numbers in all three categories at once. Five things predict whether you will still be happy in month twelve:
- The resolution your graphics card can feed, not the one you can afford. This is the single decision that shapes the whole build. A 1440p panel on a card that cannot render 1440p quickly is a downgrade, not an upgrade.
- Milliseconds between frames, not hertz. 60Hz is a new frame every 16.67 ms; 144Hz every 6.94 ms; 240Hz every 4.17 ms. The first jump is transformative, the second is small, the third is nearly nothing.
- The port and the cable, not the panel. A DisplayPort 1.4a link carries up to 32.4 Gbps; a Premium High Speed HDMI cable carries 18 Gbps. Buy 180Hz over the wrong connection and you get 60Hz.
- Keyboard layout in keys, and mouse weight in grams. 104, 87, 79, 68, 61 keys. 55g, 85g, 120g. These two numbers decide fit better than any feature list, and neither is on the front of the box.
- Who imports it into India. Not the brand on the lid - the distributor whose warranty you would actually be claiming against.
The noise to tune out: DPI ceilings of 12,000 or 26,000, which nobody games near; the “1ms” response figure, which is a best-case number measured in the manufacturer’s favour; RGB zone counts; the number of programmable buttons on a mouse you will map two of; and the printed MRP, which across all three categories is close to fictional.
Start with the split, not the specs
Before any spec, decide how the money divides. The instinct is to split a peripherals budget evenly, or to buy the flashy keyboard first because it is the thing your hands touch. Both are wrong, for a dull reason: replaceability.
A mouse that turns out to be too heavy costs ₹1,200 to replace. A keyboard whose layout does not suit you costs ₹2,500. A monitor you bought at the wrong resolution costs ₹10,000 and sits on your desk for six years reminding you. So the screen gets first claim on the budget and the largest share of it - roughly 60 per cent of a first setup, comfortably more if you are stepping up to 1440p.
The corollary matters too. If your total has to come down, take it out of the keyboard. A ₹1,100 mechanical and a ₹4,300 membrane both type well enough to play on, and the gap between them is comfort rather than capability. The gap between a ₹9,000 monitor and no monitor upgrade at all is every frame you see.
The monitor, part one: resolution is a graphics-card decision
Sharpness is not a property of resolution. It is a property of pixel density, which is resolution divided by screen size, and the arithmetic is worth doing because it exposes the one combination the market keeps selling and nobody should buy.

The 27-inch 1080p panel is the one to walk past. It is cheap, it looks generous in a listing, and at 81.6 pixels per inch it delivers less detail per square centimetre than the 24-inch screen sitting next to it for the same money.
Beyond that, the rule is the boring one: buy the resolution your graphics card can render at the frame rate you want, then buy the size that gives you sensible density at that resolution. 1080p at 24 inches, or 1440p at 27. If you are not sure what your card can do, assume 1080p - a card that comfortably holds high frame rates at 1440p usually costs more than the monitor does.
Viewing distance is the sanity check on size. OSHA’s computer workstation guidance puts the preferred distance at 20 to 40 inches, or 50 to 100 cm, from your eye to the front of the screen. A 27-inch panel at the near end of that band fills more of your vision than you might want; a 24-inch at the far end starts to feel small. Measure your actual desk depth before you commit to 27 inches.
The monitor, part two: how much refresh rate you can feel
Refresh rate is the spec printed largest and the one most misread, because hertz is a rate and what you actually perceive is an interval. Converting one to the other makes the diminishing returns obvious.

The jump from 60Hz to 144Hz removes nearly ten milliseconds from the gap between frames, and it is the single biggest reason to buy a gaming monitor at all - motion is dramatically smoother and aiming feels more direct. Every step after that removes between one and one and a half milliseconds. They are real, they are small, and each one also requires your graphics card to actually produce that many frames, which is where most of the money goes.
So 144Hz to 180Hz is the band to buy. The 200Hz panels that turn up at similar prices are a bonus rather than a reason to pick one monitor over a better-rounded 180Hz one, and 240Hz-plus is a competitive-shooter purchase where the limiting factor is your hardware, not the panel.
Ignore the “1ms” response-time figure while you are here. It is a best-case grey-to-grey or motion-blur-reduction number chosen to flatter, often achieved only at an overdrive setting that introduces visible overshoot artefacts, and it is not comparable between brands.
The monitor, part three: panel, sync and the ports that decide it
Three remaining calls, in the order they matter.
Panel type. For gaming the practical choice is IPS or VA, and it splits by what you play.

IPS is the safer default and doubles better as a work screen. VA earns its place if you mostly play story games in the dark. Curve is a preference rather than an upgrade: it helps on larger panels and immersive games, does very little at 24 inches, and straight lines staying straight is arguably better for competitive play.
Adaptive sync. This is the feature that genuinely matters and costs nothing on modern panels - it syncs the monitor’s refresh to your card’s frame rate so you never see tearing. There are three labels and they are not equivalent. AMD’s FreeSync is the loosest. NVIDIA’s G-SYNC Compatible is a validation programme: when NVIDIA published its first testing round in May 2019 it had evaluated 503 adaptive-sync monitors and passed 28 of them, 5.56 per cent, with 273 failing for lacking a variable refresh range of at least 2.4:1 - that is, something like 60Hz to 144Hz rather than 100Hz to 144Hz. VESA’s AdaptiveSync Display certification, launched on 2 May 2022, is the open equivalent, with more than 50 test criteria covering flicker and grey-to-grey overshoot, and a logo that carries the maximum certified refresh rate. Any of the three beats none. A panel carrying two of them is a good sign about the manufacturer’s care.
The ports. This is where high refresh rates actually die. DisplayPort 1.4a carries a maximum link bandwidth of 32.4 Gbps across four lanes at 8.1 Gbps each, for a payload of 25.92 Gbps. An HDMI cable certified as Premium High Speed is tested to 18 Gbps. That gap is why nearly every gaming monitor sold in India needs DisplayPort to reach its rated refresh, and why so many owners report a “faulty” 180Hz panel that turns out to be plugged into HDMI. Consoles invert the problem: a PS5 or Xbox Series X outputs 120Hz only over HDMI 2.1, whose Ultra High Speed cable supports up to 48 Gbps, and most affordable monitors here ship HDMI 2.0 and will hold your console at 60Hz.
The keyboard: switch feel first, layout second
Mechanical or membrane is the first call, and it is a trade rather than a ladder.

Two things fall out of that table that the shop floor never mentions. First, Blue - the loud, satisfying, clicky one people gravitate to in a showroom - is rated for half the life of Red and Brown. Second, the “gaming” switch, Speed Silver, differs from Red only in actuating at 1.2 mm instead of 2.0 mm, which is 0.8 mm of your fingertip’s travel. If that sounds like a small thing to build a purchase around, it is.
Red is the sensible default for gaming, Brown if you type as much as you play, Blue only if nobody else is in the room.
Layout is the decision most people get wrong, because they copy what competitive players use without the reason.

The 60% exists for one real reason: it clears a large arc of desk for big, low-sensitivity mouse sweeps in shooters. That is a genuine competitive advantage and it is why professionals use them. It is not an advantage in a MOBA, a strategy game, a spreadsheet or a code editor, where the missing function row and arrow keys move behind a modifier and quietly slow you down. Buy the smallest layout that still contains the keys you press.
The mouse: weight and shape before sensor
Every gaming mouse sold in India has a sensor good enough. The differences that decide whether you like it are physical.
Weight is the one to get right, and it splits by genre rather than by budget. Under about 70 grams is flick-aim territory: easier to start and stop quickly, less tiring across an aim-heavy session, and the reason shooter players chase lightweight designs. Around 85 to 100 grams is the all-rounder band. Above about 110 grams you are into feature-heavy mice that feel planted and deliberate, which suits MOBAs, MMOs and mixed desk work and actively hurts in a shooter. Shape and grip. Measure your hand from the crease at the base of your palm to the tip of your middle finger, and note how you actually hold a mouse now:
- Palm grip - whole hand resting on the shell, fingers flat. Most relaxed, least tiring over long sessions. Wants a longer mouse with a pronounced hump that fills your palm.
- Claw grip - palm touching the back, fingers arched. The common competitive grip. Wants a medium mouse with a rear hump.
- Fingertip grip - palm not touching at all, fingers doing all the work. Wants the shortest, lightest mouse you can find, because your fingers carry the whole weight.
There is no lookup table that turns a hand measurement into a model number, whatever the internet claims. What you can do is compare your hand length against the mouse’s published length in millimetres, which every manufacturer lists, and know that a palm-grip user with a long hand on a short mouse ends up clawing whether they meant to or not.
Switch type is the durability decision. Mechanical switches use two metal contacts that physically touch. They feel crisp, they are cheap, and the contacts wear until one press registers as two - the double-click, which is how most gaming mice die. Optical switches use a light beam interrupted by a shutter, with no metal contact to wear, and largely avoid the fault. You cannot feel the difference clicking them. If you keep a mouse for years rather than replacing it, that is the feature worth paying for.
DPI is the number to ignore. The 12,000 and 26,000 ceilings are marketing; almost nobody games above 3,200 DPI and most competitive shooter players sit between 400 and 1,600.
Set it up right, in seven steps
The order matters, because several of these are only fixable inside the return window.
- Unbox and test everything hard in the first fortnight. Run every key on the keyboard, click every mouse button several hundred times, and put a full-screen colour test on the monitor to catch dead pixels and backlight bleed. A fault found in week one is a return; the same fault in month five is a service ticket.
- Connect the monitor with DisplayPort, not HDMI. Several popular panels ship a DisplayPort cable precisely because HDMI will not carry their rated refresh, and buyers who reach for the HDMI cable they already own conclude the monitor is broken.
- Set the refresh rate manually in Windows display settings. It does not always switch by itself, and a 180Hz panel running at Windows’ default 60Hz is the single most common “my monitor is faulty” report.
- Turn adaptive sync on in two places - the monitor’s own on-screen menu and your graphics driver’s control panel. It is off by default in at least one of them on most setups.
- Set the screen height and distance before you play a single game. OSHA puts the preferred viewing distance at 20 to 40 inches (50 to 100 cm) and the centre of the monitor 15 to 20 degrees below horizontal eye level, with the top of the screen at or slightly below your eyes. The American Academy of Ophthalmology’s version is easier to check: sit about 25 inches away, roughly arm’s length, and gaze slightly downward.
- Set the mouse polling rate to 1000Hz and the DPI down. Polling rate is how often the mouse reports its position: 125Hz means a report every 8 ms, 1000Hz every 1 ms, and 8000Hz every 0.125 ms. The move from 125Hz to 1000Hz is worth making; the move to 8000Hz costs CPU for a difference you will not feel.
- Register the products and file the invoice somewhere you will find it. Every warranty claim in this category starts with the invoice, and the brand name on the lid is not who you will be dealing with.

Below the entry column there is a floor, and it is real: under about ₹800 on a keyboard and ₹400 on a mouse, the reviews turn into a stream of fragile cables and switches failing in weeks.
Two pricing notes specific to India. First, the MRP printed on these listings is close to fiction across all three categories - the selling price is the only number that means anything, and a “62% off” banner is a statement about the MRP, not about the deal. Second, GST on monitors dropped from 28 per cent to 18 per cent following the 56th GST Council meeting on 3 September 2025, with the new rates effective from 22 September 2025, which brought large-panel prices down more than small ones. Keyboards and mice were already at 18 per cent.
Warranty and service reality in India
The brand on the lid is not the entity that will replace your mouse. Peripherals from the international brands reach India through distributors, and that relationship is what your warranty actually rests on. Logitech’s gaming peripherals carry a two-year India warranty through importer Rashi Peripherals, and owners in our round-ups routinely confirm replacements arriving, sometimes within two or three days. HyperX and Razer stock sold through Smartchoice, distributed via HP, carries an India warranty too, though Razer’s owners report longer waits and mail-in RMA more often. The value-brand boards - the ₹2,000 to ₹5,600 tier - typically carry one year, and their owners are markedly less likely to report a claim that went anywhere.
Two consequences worth internalising. Service-centre density thins out fast outside the major cities, so if you are more than a couple of hours from a metro, the practical warranty is whatever the seller’s return window gives you plus whatever the brand will courier. And a grey-market listing at a few hundred rupees less is not a bargain in a category where the most common failure arrives in month ten.
What actually breaks, and when
Peripherals do not so much wear out as develop one specific, predictable fault each.
- The mouse click, at eight months to two years. The switch wears until one physical press registers as two, so a single click fires twice and a drag releases on its own. It recurs across almost every popular model at every price. Optical switches largely avoid it.
- Keyboard keys, from around year one. A key stops registering, needs a harder press, or starts double-typing. It shows up on membrane and mechanical boards alike. On a hot-swap board you replace that one switch; on everything else you replace the board.
- Budget-board RGB, from around year one. LEDs dim and die key by key on cheaper mechanical boards. Cosmetic, irreversible, and the reason those boards get a lower score than their typing feel deserves.
- Monitor panels, inside months when they fail at all. Lines or grey patches appearing on the panel is the pattern owners report, and the frustrating part is brands classing that as internal damage and declining it under warranty. Rarer than the other three, and far more expensive.
Common mistakes
- Buying a resolution your graphics card cannot feed. The most expensive error here. A 1440p panel driven at 45 frames per second is worse than a 1080p panel at 140, and it costs more.
- Buying a 27-inch 1080p monitor because it is bigger for the money. At 81.6 pixels per inch it is a softer picture than the 24-inch beside it. Bigger is not sharper.
- Buying a 60% keyboard because professionals use one. They use it for mouse room in shooters. If you also write, code or play anything with hotkeys, you are paying for a smaller board with your own productivity.
- Chasing DPI, hertz and button counts. Three ceilings you will never reach, sold as three features.
- Buying the flashy keyboard first. It is the most replaceable of the three and the most heavily marketed. Spend on the screen.
- Assuming “mechanical” means “durable”. A well-built membrane board frequently outlasts a budget mechanical. Mechanical is a feel decision.
- Reading the MRP as a discount. In this aisle it is a number chosen to make the selling price look generous.
Which peripherals for your setup

What gaming peripherals should I buy first?
The monitor, and it is not close. A keyboard and a mouse can be replaced for ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 each if you get them wrong, and both are cheap enough to treat as consumables. A monitor is the one you keep for five or six years, the one you look at for every hour of every session, and the one where a bad call costs you real money. So spend the monitor budget first and let it take most of the total. A sensible three-way split for a first setup is roughly ₹10,000 on the screen, ₹2,500 on the keyboard and ₹1,500 on the mouse, and if the total has to come down, take it out of the keyboard rather than the screen.
What monitor resolution should I buy for my graphics card?
Match the resolution to what your card can actually render at the frame rate you want, not to your budget. 1080p at 23.8 inches works out to about 93 pixels per inch, which is sharp at normal desk distance and is the resolution a budget-to-mid graphics card can push to high frame rates. 1440p at 27 inches is about 109 pixels per inch, a visible step up in sharpness, but it asks for roughly 1.8 times as many pixels per frame, and on a weak card you get a beautiful screen running at a disappointing frame rate. The failure mode nobody warns you about is 1080p on a 27-inch panel, which lands at about 82 pixels per inch and looks soft up close. Buy 1080p at 24 inches or 1440p at 27, and skip the combination in between.
How many Hz do I actually need for gaming?
144Hz to 180Hz is the sweet spot, and the arithmetic explains why. A refresh rate is just how often a new frame appears, so 60Hz means a new frame every 16.67 milliseconds, 144Hz every 6.94 ms, 240Hz every 4.17 ms and 360Hz every 2.78 ms. Going from 60Hz to 144Hz cuts 9.73 ms off the gap between frames, which is a large and obvious change. Going from 144Hz to 240Hz cuts a further 2.77 ms, and 240Hz to 360Hz only 1.39 ms. The curve flattens hard, and each step also demands that your graphics card actually render that many frames. Buy the first jump, be sceptical of the second, and ignore the third unless you play competitive shooters for a living.
Is a mechanical or membrane keyboard better for gaming?
It is a feel-versus-reliability trade rather than a straight upgrade. A mechanical board puts an individual spring-loaded switch under each key, which gives a crisper, more consistent press that most gamers prefer. A membrane board presses each key onto a rubber sheet: softer, cheaper, and with no mechanical switch contact to wear out and start double-typing. Which keyboard switch should I pick - red, brown or blue?
Red for gaming, brown if you type as much as you play, and blue only if nobody shares the room. Far less than the box advertises. What matters is that the sensor tracks accurately and consistently at the setting you actually use, which every branded mouse manages. Treat a high DPI ceiling as a number you will never reach rather than a feature you are paying for, and choose on weight, shape and switch durability instead.
Should gaming peripherals be wired or wireless?
Wired by default, wireless when a clear desk genuinely matters to you. Wireless costs more for the same build quality, adds battery weight to a mouse, and needs charging. Based on the current street prices across our three gaming round-ups, real 24-to-27-inch high-refresh monitors run roughly ₹8,500 to ₹19,000, gaming keyboards roughly ₹1,100 to ₹6,500, and gaming mice roughly ₹500 to ₹4,600. The value bands within those are narrower: about ₹9,000 to ₹11,000 for a 1080p high-refresh monitor, ₹2,000 to ₹2,700 for a mechanical keyboard, and ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 for a mouse. Below roughly ₹800 on a keyboard and ₹400 on a mouse you are into no-name territory where cables and switches fail in weeks, and that is a false economy rather than a bargain.
Why won't my monitor run its advertised refresh rate?
Almost always the cable, the port or a setting rather than a fault. High refresh rates need bandwidth: a DisplayPort 1.4a connection carries a maximum link bandwidth of 32.4 Gbps across four lanes, while an HDMI connection certified as Premium High Speed tops out at 18 Gbps. An older HDMI port or a basic cable will silently cap you at a lower rate. Then Windows does not always switch automatically, so you have to select the higher refresh rate manually in display settings, and turn adaptive sync on in the monitor's own menu as well as your graphics driver. Start with the DisplayPort cable and the Windows setting. If it still will not hold the rate after that, it can be a genuine defect, so test it inside the return window.
Do gaming monitors and keyboards need a BIS registration mark in India?
Monitors and keyboards do, under the Bureau of Indian Standards' Compulsory Registration Scheme for electronics and IT goods. The scheme's own wording is blunt: no person shall manufacture or store for sale, import, sell or distribute goods that do not conform to the specified Indian standard and do not bear the Standard Mark with a unique registration number obtained from BIS. Certification bodies list visual display units and video monitors, and keyboards including wireless ones, under IS 13252 (Part 1): 2010, the safety standard for IT equipment. We could not find a plain mouse on the covered product list, so treat the mark as a filter that applies to the screen and the board rather than to all three. On a monitor especially, its absence on a listing is worth a question before you pay.

The mouse, then the keyboard, then the monitor. On a mouse the main click switch wears until one physical press registers as two, which typically shows up between eight months and two years and recurs across almost every popular model, budget and premium alike. On a keyboard the failure looks slightly different: a key that stops registering, one that needs a harder press, or one that starts double-typing, usually from around a year in, and on cheaper boards the RGB LEDs die key by key from about the same point. Monitors fail less often but more expensively, with owners reporting lines or grey patches appearing within months and brands classing that as internal damage outside warranty. All of which is why the invoice and the return window matter more than the warranty banner.
Can I use a gaming monitor with a PS5 or Xbox Series X?
Yes, but check the HDMI version before you buy or you will be capped at 60Hz. A PS5 or Xbox Series X can output 120Hz, and it needs an HDMI 2.1 connection to do it.
