Step 2: The GPU - and the wattage the listing hides

Which tier for which resolution. ASUS’s own guidance across the RTX 50 line is worth taking at face value, because it is unusually modest: the RTX 5050 is positioned for 1080p and esports, the RTX 5060 for smoother 1080p across a range of titles, the RTX 5070 as the first tier with enough headroom for 1440p, and only the RTX 5080 and 5090 for high-refresh 1440p and 4K. Step 4: The processor - H, HX, or nothing

Mobile processors carry a suffix that tells you which power class the chip belongs to, and for gaming only two of them matter.

The numbers worth knowing:

  • Brightness. Over 250 nits is above average for a laptop; 300 nits is the bright end. Below 250 and you will be fighting daylight.
  • Colour. Good panels cover over 95% of sRGB, and many hit 100%. A “45% NTSC” panel - the polite phrasing budget listings use - is roughly 62% sRGB, which looks washed out.
  • Response time. Refresh rate is how often the screen redraws; response time is how fast a pixel can actually change. A 144Hz panel with 40ms pixels is 144Hz on paper only.
  • Resolution. 1440p renders about 78% more pixels than 1080p. On a 5060-or-below GPU that is a frame-rate cost with little to show for it.

How to work out what you are actually buying, in order:

  1. Find the exact model number, including the configuration suffix - not the marketing name.
  2. Search that model number alongside “review” and the word “nits”. Independent reviewers measure panels; listings do not.
  3. If nothing measured exists, check whether the brand’s own spec page states an sRGB percentage or a nit figure. Silence on both is itself an answer.

Step 6: RAM, storage and what you can fix later

16GB is the working floor for gaming in 2026, and it is what most machines in the mainstream band ship with. But the spec that decides how the laptop ages is not the number, it is the slots.

Look for two SODIMM slots (or one filled and one free), and a second M.2 socket for a drive you add later.
