A ceiling fan is the cheapest, hardest-working appliance in an Indian home - it runs more hours a year than anything else, which is exactly why the running cost and the year-two failure modes matter more than the showroom suggests. The aisle now sells two very different things under one name: a traditional high-speed induction fan for around 1,800 rupees, and a BLDC fan for 2,800 to 4,000 that halves the electricity but adds a circuit board and a remote that can fail after the warranty. The ceiling-fan aisle is louder than it used to be. The old pitch was “high speed” and “100% copper motor”; the new one is “BLDC”, “5-star”, “saves up to 65%” and a remote. Most of it is true and most of it is beside the point. The first real choice is the motor. A traditional induction fan is cheap (around 1,800 rupees), dead simple and has nothing electronic to break - but it runs at 50-75 watts and most are BEE 1-star. A BLDC fan runs at 28-35 watts, comes with a remote, holds speed better on low voltage and runs far longer on an inverter - but it adds a control board (PCB) that, across nearly every brand we read, is the part owners replace in year two or three for 1,500-1,800 rupees once the warranty lapses.

So the fan worth buying depends on how long you run it and how good the service is in your city. If it runs eight to sixteen hours a day, the BLDC’s lower running cost clears its price premium in well under two years - buy the BLDC. If it’s a guest room used twice a month, the induction fan is the honest call. Either way, the two numbers that actually predict comfort are sweep (1200mm/48-inch is standard for a normal room; go 1400mm for a large hall) and air delivery in CMM (210-235 is good for 1200mm) - not the RPM number, which brands inflate and which says more about noise than breeze.
