How to choose a WiFi extender in India
Start by being honest about what an extender is for. It fixes one dead corner - the far bedroom, the terrace, the room behind two brick walls - by picking up your router’s signal and repeating it. It does not fix a whole patchy home, and it does not make your broadband faster. A single-radio repeater spends half its airtime listening and half re-broadcasting, so the room it covers typically sees somewhere around half the speed your router would give it at that distance. Owners who bought one expecting their full 300 Mbps in the back bedroom are the single largest source of angry reviews in this category, and they were sold an unrealistic expectation rather than a broken product.
The specs that decide it are duller than the carton suggests. Bands come first: a single-band extender only repeats 2.4GHz, which is enough for cameras, smart plugs and a phone on a modest plan, and a hard cap on anything else - a dual-band model that also carries 5GHz is the sensible floor for a real fibre line. Second is whether it will actually pair with your ISP’s router, because the recurring failure in India is an extender that refuses to see a JioFiber or Airtel Xstream 5GHz network on a high channel, and those routers rarely let you pin the channel yourself. Third is the wired port, which is the underrated one: if you can run a cable to the far room, the extender in access-point mode stops repeating altogether and gives you full speed - and then the port’s speed, 10/100 or Gigabit, becomes the number that matters.
