The SSD aisle is sold on one headline: the peak read speed, in megabytes per second. It’s real, but for most people it’s the least important number on the box. A 7,100MB/s Gen4 drive and a 2,400MB/s Gen3 drive both boot Windows in seconds and load apps instantly; the gap only shows up when you’re moving very large files or editing high-bitrate video, and even then it’s smaller than the numbers suggest. What decides whether an upgrade actually helps is more basic - and it starts with what your machine can take.

Three things matter before speed. The first is form factor and interface: a modern laptop or desktop wants an M.2 NVMe drive (a gum-stick that slots flat on the board), while an older 2015-era laptop with a spinning hard disk usually takes a 2.5-inch SATA drive - the single most cost-effective upgrade you can make to a slow old machine. The second is capacity: 1TB is the current sweet spot on cost-per-gigabyte, and buying a 240GB drive to save a few hundred rupees is a false economy you’ll regret in a year. The third is the one nobody prints - whether the brand’s warranty is real. SSDs mostly fail in one of two ways: dead on arrival, or a cell that quietly gives out after a year or two.
