The induction aisle shouts watts and preset menus, and neither one predicts whether the cooktop is still working next summer. Here is what does - the technology split, the cookware you will have to replace, and what survives an Indian line.
The quick answer
For most Indian kitchens, buy a true induction cooktop between 1600W and 2000W, with quoted surge protection and an internal cooling fan, from a brand that has a service centre in your city, and expect to spend roughly ₹2,500 to ₹4,000. That covers everyday dal, rice, roti and tea without drama, and the two boring features are what decide whether you are still using it in year three.
The honest “but” comes in two parts. First, if you refuse to replace your plain aluminium and old steel vessels, true induction simply will not heat them, and you want an infrared cooktop instead - a genuinely different machine with genuinely worse running cost. Second, this is a high-failure category. The control board dying, the fan seizing and the panel going dark are all common enough that the country’s best-selling budget cooktop sits at 3.7 stars across roughly 75,800 ratings. Everything below is how to work out which case you are in - the technology split, the cookware you will have to replace, what surge protection actually buys, and where the money goes. The four things that actually matter
Strip out the badges and the decision is four questions.
- Is it true induction or infrared? These are sold under the same search term and cook nothing alike. Get this wrong and either your vessels do not work, or your electricity bill does something you did not plan for.
- Will your cookware work, and what will you replace? A magnet test on your existing vessels takes two minutes and reframes the whole budget.
- Can it survive an Indian line? Quoted surge protection and an internal cooling fan are what separate a cooktop with multi-year owners from one that throws an overheat error in month eight.
- Will the brand service it? In a category that fails this often, service reach is not a tiebreaker. It is a primary spec.
And the two that do not matter: wattage, beyond “how fast it boils”, and the preset menu count. Nobody who owns one of these uses the Idli/Dosa/Curry buttons; they pick a power level by hand. On a single day’s listings you can find a 2000W cooktop at about ₹1,900 and a 1300W Philips at about ₹2,600 - the number on the box is not a price ladder and it is not a quality ladder.
Step 1: True induction or infrared, the split the aisle hides
This is the decision the search results deliberately blur, because infrared cooktops are listed with “induction” in the title and sold in the same price band.
True induction uses a coil under the glass to generate a magnetic field, which induces current directly in a ferrous vessel. The vessel is the heating element. The glass only gets hot because the pan is sitting on it, so it cools quickly, and the cooktop cuts out the moment you lift the pan.
Infrared (also sold as radiant or halogen) heats a coil that glows red and radiates heat upward through the glass. It is a hot plate with a nicer surface. Because it does not care about magnetism, it works with every vessel you own - and that flexibility is the entire reason it exists.

The listings tell you which one you are looking at if you read them properly: “works with all cookware” means infrared. No true induction cooktop can make that claim.
There is a quality signal here too. Across a day’s worth of listings, the infrared units rate consistently lower than true induction in the same price band - one popular infrared cooktop sits at 3.3 stars, others at 3.7 to 3.9, against 4.0 to 4.3 for the mid-band induction models. Some of that is the technology being oversold to people who expected induction speed, and some of it is that the plate staying hot after switch-off catches people out. Around small children it is a real burn risk in a way induction is not.
Buy infrared with your eyes open: as a backup for when the cylinder runs out, or because replacing your cookware is genuinely not happening. For everyday cooking, true induction is the better machine.
Step 2: Wattage and power levels, and what more actually buys
Everyday Indian cooking sits comfortably between 1200W and 1800W. A 2000W or 2100W cooktop brings a big vessel of water to the boil faster, which is useful if you cook in quantity, and that is the whole of what the extra wattage buys. It does not grind out a better sabzi and it is not a durability signal - in the slim, fanless budget units, high wattage is part of why they run hot and trip their own overheat protection.
What is worth more attention is the granularity of the power control. Most cooktops give you a row of fixed steps and a fistful of presets. A few give you real control: the Hawkins Futura, for instance, offers 20 power settings from 100W to 2000W in 100-watt increments, which is close to what you get from a gas knob and is the single reason its owners buy it. If you hold simmers, nurse milk, or fry things that catch, that granularity matters more than 200 extra watts at the top end.
There is a practical electrical ceiling too. A 2000W cooktop draws roughly 8.7A at 230V, which is above what a 6A socket is rated for - which is why the mainstream Indian units ship with a 15A plug. Worth knowing before you buy, because a cooktop that needs an adapter to reach the only spare socket in your kitchen is an annoyance you will have every single day.
Step 3: The cookware question, and what you will have to replace
Do this before you buy anything, because it can change your decision entirely.
The magnet test. Take a fridge magnet round your kitchen and press it to the base of every vessel you cook in daily. If it sticks firmly, that vessel will heat on induction. If it slides off or holds weakly, it will not.
Philips’s own guidance for its India cooktops is specific: use cookware “made of ferrous metal such as made of steel, iron or aluminum with stainless steel cladding base”, and it names ordinary aluminium and mixed-material vessels as incompatible. In practice, here is how an average Indian kitchen sorts out.

Size matters as much as material. The base has to be flat and at least 12 cm across; below that the cooktop will not detect it and you get an E0. There is a ceiling too, and it differs by brand: Philips specifies a base “larger than 12cm and smaller than 20cm”, while Prestige manuals quote a usable range up to 26 cm. Philips also warns that the vessel should not sit outside the ring zone, because an oversized base pushes heat into the appliance edges and can deform it over time.
That upper limit is the one that catches South Indian kitchens out. A wide dosa tawa is often larger than the heating ring, so the centre browns and the edges stay pale - a real limitation, not a fault. The same applies to a big kadhai. If most of your cooking happens in wide vessels, check the diameter against the cooktop’s stated range before you order.
Budget honestly for the swap. Most kitchens need two or three new vessels: an induction-base pressure cooker , a patila, and a tawa. That is a real cost sitting on top of the cooktop’s price, and it is the cost that makes some people choose infrared instead. Step 4: Surviving an Indian line, and what the E-codes mean
This is where the category actually fails, and the two features that decide it are barely advertised.
Surge protection. A metal-oxide varistor clamps a voltage spike before it reaches the control board, and a spike killing the board is one of the most common terminal faults here. The better cooktops quote a rating you can compare: Prestige advertises 4kV surge protection across several models, Philips a triple-MOV design rated for 4kW. That is a specification worth paying for on an Indian supply, and it is worth vastly more than another preset menu.
The cooling fan. Inside the cooktop is power electronics that hate heat. Units with an internal fan shed it during a long cooking session; the slim, fanless ones eventually hit their own overheat cut-out. That is the single clearest divide between the cooktops with owners three and four years in and the ones that die in month eight. The trade-off is honest: a fan-cooled cooktop is heavier, bulkier and audible. The error codes are a standard set across most Indian cooktops, and they tell you whether the problem is your cookware, your mains, or the unit itself.

E6 is the one to watch. On a healthy cooktop it can appear after a very long continuous cook, particularly on a fanless unit. An E6 that appears within minutes, every time, is a failing board or sensor - and it is the most common way these end up in the bin.
Step 5: Portable cooktop, twin hob, or built-in induction
Almost everyone buying “an induction cooktop” in India is buying a single-zone portable unit, and for good reason.
- Single-zone portable is the volume market and where all the choice lives, roughly ₹1,800 to ₹4,500. It plugs into a socket, sits next to your gas stove, and moves.
- Twin countertop hobs exist as a middle option - a dual-hob Hawkins runs about ₹8,900 at the time of writing - but a twin unit at 3600W is a serious electrical load on one socket, so check your wiring before you commit.
- Built-in induction is a thin and expensive shelf in India. A two-zone iBELL built-in hob sits around ₹16,000, a Bosch 30 cm two-zone hob around ₹50,000, and a Siemens past ₹1.3 lakh. Search “built-in hob” on any Indian retailer and what comes back is overwhelmingly gas.
That last point is worth sitting with. In a modular kitchen in Europe, built-in induction is the default; in India it is a niche import product with almost no mid-price options. If you are building a kitchen and want induction as the primary cooking surface, you are either paying premium-import money or running two or three portable units, which is not as silly as it sounds. Certification, and the star rating that does not exist yet
Two pieces of regulation matter here, and one of them is a gap rather than a rule.
BIS is mandatory. Induction stoves must be registered under BIS’s Compulsory Registration Scheme against IS 302 (Part 2/Section 6): 2009, and that has been mandatory since 1 April 2021. Read the wording carefully: CRS registration means a BIS registration number on the product and packaging, not the ISI mark you would look for on a gas stove or a mixer grinder. Either way, a no-name listing that cannot show a registration number is an uncertified mains appliance on a wet counter, and the ₹300 saving is not the trade you think it is.
The BEE star rating is not there yet. BEE’s programme does cover induction hobs, but the mandatory labelling regime has been deferred to 1 January 2027, pushed back six months from the earlier date. So today there is no star rating printed across the aisle for you to compare one cooktop against another. That absence is precisely why the marketing falls back on wattage and preset counts - and why an “energy saving” or “90% efficient” badge on a carton right now is the manufacturer’s own claim with no government rating behind it.
What you will actually spend

The pricing trap here is not at the bottom, it is the wattage-to-price mismatch in the middle. Because wattage does not track price, an aggressive 2000W listing at ₹1,900 looks like it is beating a 1300W brand cooktop at ₹2,600 on every visible number. It is not. What the ₹700 buys is the surge protection, the service network and the warranty you will need in a category that fails this often.
Setting it up and the first week
Nothing here needs an electrician, but two of these steps are how people wreck a new cooktop.
- Check the socket before you unbox. A 2000W cooktop needs a 15A socket, not the 6A one your phone charger uses. Do not run it off a thin extension board.
- Give it clearance. The cooling vents are on the sides and underneath - keep it off a cloth, off the edge of the sink, and out of a tight cabinet recess.
- Do the magnet test on your vessels before you cook, so an E0 does not read as a fault.
- Centre the vessel on the ring. Off-centre pots heat unevenly, and on the pacemaker question below, concentric placement is also the safety-relevant one.
- Stress-test it inside the return window. Boil a full vessel, then run it continuously for 20 to 30 minutes and watch for an overheat shutdown or a rattling fan.
Running cost and maintenance
The arithmetic is refreshingly simple. An 1800W cooktop at full power draws 1.8 units an hour; a 2000W one draws 2. But you almost never hold full power for an hour - most cooking drops to a lower level after the initial heat-up, so real consumption sits well below the nameplate. Multiply by your own per-unit tariff, which varies enormously by state and slab, and you have a number that means something for your kitchen.
Induction is genuinely efficient at the point of use. For scale, ENERGY STAR in the US puts gas at around 33% of the heat generated reaching the food, against 74 to 85% for certified electric cooking products. Whether that translates into a lower bill than LPG in your kitchen is a different question, and the honest answer is that it is close: it depends on your tariff slab and on the price of a domestic cylinder, which is revised monthly and is price-protected in a way electricity is not. The reliable gains from induction are the undramatic ones - no cylinder to chase, no flame, and far less waste heat dumped into a kitchen that is already 34 degrees in May.
One easy saving: if you are boiling water for tea or instant noodles, an electric kettle does that job faster and with less spillage than any cooktop. Use the cooktop for cooking.
Maintenance is close to nothing, and that is one of the real arguments for induction over gas. Wipe the glass once it has cooled, with a soft cloth and a mild cleaner - not a scouring pad, which hazes the surface. Keep water away from the panel and the vents; water seeping under the glass is a documented failure mode on at least one popular model. Do not slide heavy vessels across the top. And if the fan starts rattling, get it looked at while the unit is still in warranty, because that fan is the reason the cooktop is not overheating.
Common mistakes
- Buying infrared thinking it is induction. “Works with all cookware” is the tell. It is a different technology with higher running cost and a plate that stays hot after switch-off.
- Shopping on wattage. It tells you how fast water boils and nothing about how long the cooktop lives. It does not even track price.
- Paying for preset menus. Owners use manual power levels. The Idli/Dosa/Curry buttons are shelf decoration.
- Not testing your vessels first. Discovering that your entire aluminium collection is useless, after the cooktop arrives, is how people end up with an unused appliance in a cupboard.
- Ignoring the base diameter. Under 12 cm gets you an E0. Over the cooktop’s ceiling gets you uneven cooking and, per Philips, heat pushed into the appliance edges.
- Buying the slimmest unit for daily cooking. Slim means fanless, fanless means it sheds heat badly, and heat is what kills these.
- Treating an “energy efficient” badge as a rating. There is no BEE star label on induction cooktops until 2027. That badge is marketing.
- Choosing on sticker price over serviceability. In a category with this failure rate, a cooktop you cannot get repaired is landfill by year two. Check the brand’s service locator for your pin code first.
Which induction cooktop for your situation

- You will not replace your cookware. Buy infrared, and accept the higher running cost, the slower heat and the plate that stays hot. Do not buy it for a kitchen with small children moving through it.
- You cook with precision - simmers, milk, delicate fries. Prioritise the number of power steps over peak wattage. A cooktop with 20 steps from 100W upward behaves like a gas knob; one with six fixed levels does not.
- Your area’s supply is unstable. Make quoted surge protection a hard requirement, not a nice-to-have, and read the E3/E4 codes as your early warning.
- You cook mostly in wide tawas and big kadhais. Check the vessel diameter against the cooktop’s stated range before ordering, and expect a wide dosa tawa to heat unevenly on a single ring.
- You live away from a metro. Service reach outranks every spec on this page. A brand with a technician in your district beats a better-specced online-first brand every time.
