How to choose a glucometer in India
Work out the strip price before you look at anything else. Every meter takes only its own proprietary strips, so the moment you buy the device you have signed up for that brand’s refill price for as long as you own it. The spread is wider than people expect - the cheapest mainstream 50-strip pack sells for around Rs598 and the most expensive for over Rs1,350. Someone testing twice a day gets through roughly sixty strips a month, which means the difference between a Rs12 strip and a Rs27 strip is bigger over one year than the entire price of the meter. A cheap kit with expensive strips is the most expensive thing in this category.
Then check the strips are actually buyable. Several brands sell a meter enthusiastically and then leave owners hunting for refills that no pharmacy stocks and no marketplace lists reliably - a meter you cannot feed is worth nothing, however good the readings are. The other thing worth knowing before you buy: a home meter is not a lab. Fingerstick capillary blood and a venous draw legitimately differ, and the ISO 15197:2013 standard most of these devices claim only requires 95% of readings to land within 15 mg/dL of a reference below 100 mg/dL, or within 15% at or above it. A gap of ten or fifteen points against your lab report is the device working as specified. A gap of forty, in the same direction, every time, is not - and that is the line worth using when you judge whether yours is faulty.
