The listings in this aisle sell on RAM, storage and a 4K badge, and none of those three decide whether you will be happy. What decides it is certification. A device that has passed Google’s Android TV certification carries a Widevine L1 licence, which is the permission slip Netflix, Prime Video and JioHotstar check before they will send you an HD or 4K stream. An uncertified box - and most of the cheap ones are - gets Widevine L3 instead, so Netflix either refuses to install or plays at DVD resolution on your 4K TV, no matter what the box claims. Eight gigabytes of RAM does not fix that. Nothing fixes that.
The second thing worth knowing is that “Android” is quietly leaving this category. Amazon’s newest Fire TV sticks have moved to Vega OS, a Linux build, and owners of those models report that sideloading, Downloader and third-party apps simply no longer work - which for a lot of buyers is the entire reason to own a box rather than a smart TV. The older Fire OS models still allow it. So does anything running genuine Google TV. Check which operating system a model actually ships with before you pay, because the listing will not tell you and the model names are close enough to be confusing. After that it is the usual India questions: is it an official import with a warranty entity you can call, or a US-region unit that will refuse to set up on an Indian connection, and does the pooled review count on the listing belong to this product at all.
